Rick & Morty Season Finale Delivers Ultimate Marvel Reference
In the season five finale of Rick and Morty on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim, titled “Rickmurai Jack,” viewers got to see what is tantamount to the ultimate Marvel Comics reference!
SPOILER WARNING: If you haven’t had a chance to see the fifth season finale of Rick and Morty on Cartoon Network yet and you want to avoid being spoiled, then grab portal gun and open a portal to leave this universe right now!
“Rickmurai Jack”
The fifth season finale of Rick and Morty saw the eponymous characters returning to the Citadel of Ricks, first introduced in season one episode nine, “Close Rick-Counters of the Rick Kind.”
However, you should know something about the Citadel of Ricks: it’s a Marvel reference!
The Citadel of Ricks is a play on the Interdimensional Council of Reeds, which was first introduced in Fantastic Four #570 (2009) by Jonathan Hickman, Dale Eaglesham, Paul Mounts, and Rus Wooton.
Just like the Citadel of Ricks, the Council of Reeds is made up of Reeds from different universes.
And the Council of Reeds, well, it’s led by a cadre of three versions of Reed (just like multiple versions of Rick used to rule the Citadel).
However, the ultimate Marvel Comics reference occurs when a Stan Lee version of Rick appears (let’s call him Rick C-616).

When the story turns to the Citadel of Ricks and Evil Morty mentions an event that took place in the aforementioned season one episode nine, Rick C-616 appears to tell the audience the important back detail – the same way that notes from the editor appear in the pages of Marvel Comics to send readers back to pick up important continuity details, you know, in case, you forgot.
We may not have Stan Lee cameos anymore… but at least we have the Rick of C-616 to remind of Stan the Man’s great legacy! Many Marvel Multiverse References
This was just the latest Marvel reference in the fifth season of Rick and Morty, which has been absolutely filled with them.
