REVIEW: Knives WAY Out in Doctor Aphra #15
In Doctor Aphra #15 by Alyssa Wong, Minkyu Jung, Victor Olazaba, Rachelle Rosenberg, and Joe Caramagna, with a main cover by Sara Pichelli and Nolan Woodard, we get the final entry in Doctor Aphra’s War of the Bounty Hunters tie-in arc… and it’s everything you could want from an Aphra finale!
“Party Favors”
One of my favorite moments in this issue comes when Aphra identifies a “thought dowser” (and no, it doesn’t seem to be based on the other “dowser” of the Star Wars universe, the M-HYD). In Doctor Aphra #15, the device is described as using “tech so dark that even the Sith avoided it,” so of course, Aphra wastes zero time in reaching for it!
Better yet, this narrative element leans into one of my favorite aspects of Aphra’s character design, her electro-tattoos. These don’t just look cool, they’re actually part of why she’s so adept at slicing into various types of programming!
Although I don’t want to spoil this issue for anyone wanting to read it, I loved the connection to the next part of the story we get at the conclusion of Doctor Aphra #15. Since Black Sun was so intimately connected to Shadows of the Empire by Steve Perry, the Legends story that took place between Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, it is interesting to see the organization play into the narrative here!
And what role will Crimson Dawn play in the next chapter of Aphra’s story? I’m not sure, but considering Qi’ra (played by Emilia Clarke in SOLO: A Star Wars Story) would be a great antagonist for Aphra, I can’t wait to find out how they’ll bounce off each other!
War of the Bounty Hunters
It does sort of seem like Doctor Aphra’s tie-in issues were more closely related to the earlier War of the Bounty Hunters issues than the later ones. But considering the fact that Aphra really seems like the type who would show up to a party only to disappear off into a corner with one or two other guests to engage in some questionable recreation, maybe this just prove that Aphra’s tie-in arc was as Aphra as possible!
