JACQUES ALERT: Let’s Talk About That Hawkeye Spoiler
Well, Marvel Blog True Believers, that magic time is upon us: it’s a Wednesday with new Marvel Cinematic Universe content streaming on Disney+! It’s been a few weeks since What If…? concluded, so maybe you’ve forgotten the drill… but never fear, we’re here to remind you! Swordsman
If you haven’t had a chance to see the first two episodes of Hawkeye, which are currently available for streaming on Disney+, and you want to avoid having anything spoiled, then go ahead and take aim at another page and leave this article now! Maybe go check in on Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and see how that’s coming.
Framed by Duquesne
In the first and second episodes of Hawkeye, Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld) learns that her mother, Eleanor (Vera Farmiga) has a new fiancé: Jack Duquesne (Tony Dalton). However, as the two premiere episodes unfold, we see Duquesne steal the Ronin’s sword and (more than likely) murder his uncle.
In the second episode, to test her suspicions, Bishop challenges Jack to a fencing match, ultimately proving that he is lying about his skills with a sword…
Seem suspicious? There’s a good reason for that, Marvel Blog True Believers: he’s probably Jacques Duquesne, A.K.A. the Swordsman (or possibly the next generation of the character)!
The Swordsman
The Swordsman made his first appearance in Avengers #19 (1965) by Stan Lee, Don Heck, Dick Ayers, and Artie Simek.
Just like in Hawkeye on Disney+, in which Jack talks down to the World’s Greatest Archer, the Swordsman’s first appearance featured him acting very arrogant in battle against Wanda (which, as Marvel Blog True Believers already know, is a huge mistake).
Furthermore, the Swordsman returned in Hawkeye #2 (2012) by Matt Fraction, David Aja, Matt Hollingsworth, and Chris Eliopoulos. In this issue, it was actually the next generation of the character (in another life, perhaps he and Bishop would have called one another friend).
In this issue, the Swordsman appeared with a mustache that will be immediately familiar to anyone who has had the chance to watch the first two episodes of Hawkeye!
More Next Wednesday
Just what is Duquesne planning, and does he already know that Bishop is in league with Barton? We want to hear your theories, Marvel Blog True Believers! Let us know in the comment section.
