RETRO REVIEW: The Truth About Clint Revealed in Hawkeye (2012) #5
In Hawkeye (2012) #5 by Matt Fraction, Javier Pulido, Matt Hollingsworth, and Chris Eliopoulous, with a cover by David Aja, we find out the truth behind the videotape of Clint that served as the catalyst for this two-part story!
This Looks Really Bad for Clint
In the first issue of this two-parter, we learned that there’s a videotape with footage of Clint killing one of the world’s most notorious assassins! But would Clint really do such a thing? Could he kill someone?
When it comes to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Clint’s time as Ronin means the answer to this question is yes. But in the panels of Hawkeye, things play out a little bit differently!
One aspect of this story that I really enjoyed was the inclusion of Agent Maria Hill. She first appeared in Hawkeye #4, but in this issue, she gets the chance to appear at a key moment and participate in an action scene in a memorable way. Could the character appear in the Disney+ version of the story, where she would be portrayed by Cobie Smulders? Fingers crossed, Marvel Blog True Believers!
In addition to this interesting supporting role, there is also a very satisfactory conclusion to the affair of the videotape, and whether or not Clint is guilty of the killing… and you’re unlikely to see it coming!
Clint Scrapes By Again
In the letters pages of Hawkeye #5, which you can read alongside the issue on Marvel Unlimited, Fraction reveals that this storyline was the first pitch for the series, based on a nonfiction article he wrote for GQ, “Seal Team Six are Actual Superheroes.”
Have you had a chance to read this issue, Marvel Blog True Believers? What did you think of the revelation about the videotape of Clint? Do you think we’ll end up seeing some of these elements in the next four episodes of Hawkeye? Let us know in the comment section!
