REVIEW: Pirate Timeline Ahoy in Timeless #1
In Timeless #1 by Jed MacKay, Kev Walker, Greg Land, Jay Leisten, Mark Bagley, Andrew Hennessy, Marte Gracia, and Ariana Maher, with a main cover by Kael Ngu and a whole mess of variant covers by various Marvelous artists, we see the fully realized Kang from the final issue of the five-issue Kang the Conqueror series make the case that he is the greatest supervillain of the 21st Century.
Let’s start the countdown, Marvel Blog True Believers!
Timeless #1: Pirate Timeline
This story is narrated from the perspective of Anatoly Petrov, a 21st century academic at Moscow State University. Over the course of the issue, Kang takes him on as a kind of companion (for a time), allowing Petrov to study Kang up close and personal. This gives the whole issue a very “annual” feel, making it seem like an event, or perhaps a “very special episode,” if you were to state it in television terms. This is suitable for a story that crosses millenia!
The reason Kang chose Petrov? He’s been working on a book about why Doom is the greatest supervillain of the 21st Century… But Kang has arrived to set the record straight.
Over the course of the issue, we see a “pirate timeline” approaching the main timeline. This timeline was “pruned” by Immortus. Now, Doctor Doom is returning that timeline to the main timeline, and it’s causing timequakes… with continuity-shattering consequences!
Kang and Petrov travel to the pirate timeline, but there they learn it isn’t Doom who is responsible: it’s Reed Richards… and he went ahead and shoved the time and reality stones into his eyes, too. Kang accuses Doom and Richards of being too similar to one another on account of their arrogance, and then the two battle… it’s pretty great, Marvel Blog True Believers! If you get the chance, you should definitely check this issue out (and pay close attention to the hints about what could be next for Marvel Comics).
