MarvelBlog News for January 5th, 2025
This week: Andrew Garfield denies, denies, denies. But the signs point toward yes.
Also, Daredevil is apparently going to be in a movie, just not a Daredevil movie.
This is a confusing week of MarvelBlog News.
Trust a Bro
Would Andrew Garfield lie to you? Just look at his sweet, innocent face!
He’s so naturally naïve looking that he was the obvious choice for his role as a duped friend in The Social Network.
So, I think that when Andrew Garfield states that he’s not in Spider-Man 4, we can totally trust him, right?
Actors are notoriously forthcoming about their appearances in Marvel films.
Surely, Garfield would shout it from the rafters if he starred in another Spider-Man movie.
After all, Spider-Man: No Way Home almost single-handedly turned around his career and turned him into a superstar again.
You’d understand the actor’s desire to brag that he’s in the fourth Spider-Man movie as well.
But Andrew Garfield isn’t doing that. Quite the contrary. Garfield has just publicly insisted he’s not in the fourth film.
Of course, he did it in a wink-wink way, refuting reports that he’ll appear in Spider-Man 4.
Without missing a beat, Garfield added, “I know no one’s gonna trust anything I say from now on.” And he’s correct about that.
The secret sauce in No Way Home is that it unites three different actors who have played the role of Peter Parker.
Audiences loved the meme idea brought to life of three different Spideys pointing at one another.
Fans would warmly welcome Garfield’s return, and it’d make sense from a storyline perspective as well.
Due to a spell cast by Dr. Stephen Strange, nobody remembers Peter Parker.
Presumably, that statement applies to the other two Spider-Men as well in that they’d forget their previous meeting.
The Continued Struggles of Spider-Man 4
However, who would more easily understand and believe the details of Strange’s spell than other Spider-Man?
They have weird crap happen to them all the time. So, the trio — or duo if it’s just Garfield, not Tobey Maguire – could bond again.
I suspect the details depend on the casting, as it’s been rumored since even before No Way Home came out that Sony wanted all three in the next film.
Given that No Way Home earned $1.95 billion or about $1.925 billion more than Kraven the Hunter, you can understand why.
Still, the struggles I previously mentioned with Sony remain in play as we start 2025.
During the holiday break, someone at Sony finally noticed that the studio had scheduled two Spider-Man films for 2026.
Based on delays to both projects, Spider-Verse 3 and Spider-Man 4 had both become 2026 releases.
That obviously won’t happen, but it reinforces how badly Sony has screwed up everything here.
The studio won’t get any Spider-Man revenue this year and accidentally had slotted both its golden gooses into the same fiscal year.
No business should be that incompetent, but here we are.
Is it any wonder that the head of Sony made the comments we discussed last week? Delusion is the studio brand right now.
Now, everyone aware of Spider-Man 4 is saying the same thing. The script isn’t very good yet.
Obviously, the writing team has the body of 2025 to hammer out something better, which is what I expect to happen.
I’ll warn you what the danger sign will be, though. If Sony adds a new Spider-Man 4 writer/team, the project will be back to square one.
This story is trending wrong…but it’s Tom Holland as Spider-Man. So, I remain optimistic. Please get Zendaya signed, though.
The Disney+ Update
By this point, I really should have written a Marvel’s What If…? recap for the first episode, which I have watched.
Sadly, I’ve been too busy with my other end-of-year writing to catch up yet, which is a shame.
The MCU is currently having a moment on Disney+. What If has aired its last episode for a while.
I’m in the camp that knows it’ll come back at some point despite being billed as a series finale. No quality IP stays dead these days.
But Disney+ will move on quickly with Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, which comes out on January 29th.
That’s the end of this month, folks! And producers on the project are already doing media for the film.
We just learned it won’t be canon because – and I quote – “It was not fun, honestly.”
Marvel’s Brad Winderbaum added, “We would’ve had to put so many limiters on our story to get it to lock into canon.”
Right or wrong, I’m 100 percent blaming Sony for that as they have a say in Spider-Man’s programming.
A month and a few days after the animated series starts, Daredevil: Born Again debuts on Disney+.
So, we’re going to have a ton of content during the first half of 2025.
We also learned thanks to Charlie Cox’s trainer that Daredevil will appear in an upcoming Avengers movie.
The prevailing belief is that he’ll show up in Avengers: Doomsday in some capacity although that’s yet to be confirmed.
Similarly, Elodie Yung, most recently seen as The Cleaning Lady, will return to Marvel as Elektra.
Yung will appear in Daredevil: Born Again as the sometimes antagonist and sometimes lover of Matt Murdoch.
So, there’s a lot of cause for excitement for Marvel fans in early 2025!
