One ‘Endgame’ Star Didn’t Know What Character They Were Playing Until They Arrived on Set
Over the course of the last 17 years, Marvel Studios has gained a well-earned reputation for secrecy. Often, MCU actors have admitted that they are afraid to do press about their upcoming films for fear that they will give something away.
Marvel’s dedication to secrecy, however, has led to some of the franchise’s greatest moments, including Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire’s return in Spider-Man: No Way Home, Hulk’s return in Thor: Ragnarok, or even Wanda’s death in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
One of the biggest shocks in Marvel history occurred during Avengers: Doomsday, when it was revealed that Red Skull was alive on Vormir, where he was tasked with watching over the Soul Stone.

For those who may not remember, Red Skull apparently met his doom at the end of Captain America: The First Avenger. Seven years later, he returned.
Ross Marquand Did Not Know He Was Working on an ‘Avengers’ Movie
In a recent appearance at Awesome Con 2025, Ross Marquand, who assumed the role of Red Skull from Hugo Weaving, revealed that he was not aware of what character he was playing or what movie he was working on.
“I didn’t know what movie I was going to work on. They didn’t tell me,” he recalled.

“They quite literally said it was a voice-matching job that may entail voice-matching this character that Hugo [Weaving] played, but they didn’t even say that by name.”
“I Almost Passed Out”
It wasn’t until Marquand arrived on set that he realized the gravity of his role.
“It wasn’t until I got to the set that they made me shave and put the [motion capture] dots on,” Marquand recalled. “I’m looking around, there’s like 150 people waiting for me. I’m like, ‘This is not a regular voiceover job. What is going on?’ That’s when the makeup artist leaned over, and he said, ‘Do you know what you’re working on? This is the new Avengers movie.’ I’m like, ‘Oh, God.’ I almost passed out.”

While Marquand has not reappeared as Red Skull since Endgame, the actor has stayed in the Marvel fold. In What If…?, he portrayed Ultron. Additionally, he assumed the role of Professor Xavier in X-Men ’97.
