Here Is How Marvel Kept ‘Thunderbolts*’ Big Twist a Secret
As most Marvel fans now know, Thunderbolts* not only introduced audiences to a new superteam of anti-heroes and former villains, but also the New Avengers.
At the end of the film, Valentina Allegra de Fontaine takes the stage to publicly introduce the latest iteration of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. This surprising moment could have massive implications for the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s future.

In testament to Marvel’s commitment to secrecy, the meaning behind the asterisks in the film’s title was kept under wraps until Thunderbolts* debuted. Here is how they did it.
The ‘Thunderbolts*’ Team Shot Multiple Final Scenes
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Thunderbolts* star Florence Pugh revealed that the cast and crew shot multiple versions of the film’s final scene to keep the big reveal a secret.

When the extras were on set, Val gave the team a different name. Once they were gone, the name New Avengers was finally dropped.
“We shot a version where she was like, ‘The New Thunderbolts!’” Pugh said. “And everyone was like, ‘Woo!’ And then we took all of the background [actors] out and shot [Julia Louis-Dreyfus’] line, which was kind of cool.”
As the Marvel Cinematic Universe moves towards the events of Avengers: Doomsday, the implications of Thunderbolt’s new name may be massive.
