David S. Goyer Says Marvel Turned Down His Offer to Help With Their ‘Blade’ Reboot
Last week, David S. Goyer, who wrote the original Blade trilogy, weighed in on Marvel’s troubles rebooting the franchise.
For those who haven’t been following along, a new Blade film was announced in 2019, with Mahershala Ali set to portray the titular Daywalker.

Since then, however, the film’s development has been a disaster. Over the past six years, it has cycled through at least six screenwriters, is currently searching for its third director, and is seemingly no closer to hitting theaters than when we began.
Goyer Weighed in Last Week
Discussing Marvel’s troubles, Goyer relayed his surprise.
“I think Blade is a relatively simple story, it’s not complicated,” he opined on the Happy Sad Confused podcast.

“The promise of Blade is that it should have insane a– kicking, it should be pretty scary, might be R-rated, and it should not be complicated”.
The Screenwriter Offered to Help, But Marvel Passed
In a new interview with Variety, Goyer revealed that he contacted Marvel about writing the film but was rebuffed.

“It’s so funny, about eight months ago — when, not the latest hiccup hit, but like the prior hiccup — I had so many people that would say to me, ‘Dude, would you get in there on Blade? Would you just get in there?’” Goyer said. “Whether it be friends or fans or people on social media.”
According to the screenwriter, Marvel told his agent they were “in a good place.”
“I wasn’t even really thinking about it, but then I had my agent call Marvel and say, ‘Do you guys need any help?’” Goyer recalled. “And they said, ‘We love you, but we think we’ve cracked it now, and we’re in a good place.’ Then the latest thing happened. And so no, they haven’t contacted me.”

As Goyer notes, Blade subsequently suffered another setback after his agent reached out.
Apparently, Marvel was not in as “good” a place as they believed.
Would Goyer Return If Asked?
Should the studio reach out again, however, Goyer would consider returning to the Blade franchise.

“I might consider it because I love the character, and [Blade] sort of started my superhero career. Even though I’m now considered a DC guy, I started as a Marvel guy,” he said.
“I would consider it, it would be fun to return to that world. That being said, I’m pretty much otherwise 99% done with superheroes. I love this stuff. I watch all the movies, but I’ve just done so much in the world. But yeah, I would consider it, just for old time’s sake.”
