‘Ironheart’ Was Originally Going to Have a Different Big Bad
WARNING: ‘Ironheart’ Episode 6 Spoilers Are Ahead
The big g in Ironheart finally came in the show’s final episode, when it was revealed that Parker Robbins had made a deal with Mephisto to get the red cape that gave him his supernatural powers.
For years, fans had speculated when (and how) the MCU would introduce Marvel’s devil into the franchise. Ironheart was unlikely to be at the top of anyone’s list.

Leading up to the grand reveal, it looked like a different iconic villain would be returning.
The Dormammu Mis-Direct
As Riri Williams attempts to learn the origins of the Hood’s magic, witchling-in-training Zelma tells her that the Hood’s power may come from Dormammu, the ruler of the Dark Dimension, who was stopped by Stephen Strange in the first Doctor Strange movie.

Recalling the sorcerer Kaecilius, the Dormammu disciple who drew his power from the Dark Dimension, Zelma noted that the fallen sorcerer, like Parker, was covered in stars.
When Riri finally came face-to-face with the man behind The Hood, however, he took offense at being mistaken for Dormammu.

It was, in fact, Mephisto.
The Original Plan
In a recent interview with Variety, Ironheart producer Zoie Nagelhout revealed that the show’s original intention was to have Dormammu be the source of the Hood’s power.
Ultimately, however, it was decided that Mephisto made more thematic sense.

“If you look to publishing, Parker’s power is drawn back to Dormammu, who is also a very epic character in the MCU and who would have been very exciting to play with,” she said. “But as we developed it, we realized Mephisto was a better thematic fit for what the show is about,” she said.
“Diving into these scenes of ambition and cost and what you’re willing to give up for the things you want, he offered a sort of interesting and heightened way to tie together the characters’ journeys — and in particular, Riri’s — so it became almost like a no-brainer to have him.”
As Mephisto has long been known to make (shady) deals in Marvel Comics, the character’s inclusion made sense.
Now, Pandora’s box has been opened. Who knows what is next for Marvel’s devil incarnate.
