MarvelBlog News for August 17th, 2025
This week, we try to decide what’s happening with Daredevil: Born Again, as there are mixed messages everywhere.
I Don’t Understand

Charlie Cox performed some recent promotions for Daredevil: Born Again, and…it could have gone better.
I think. Honestly, nobody’s quite sure, as Cox said something, only to be corrected almost immediately by Vincent D’Onofrio.

Maybe the feud between Wilson Fisk and Matt Murdoch has spilled over into real life?
Okay, that’s obviously not true, as D’Onofrio clearly wants to work with his buddy again.

That’s the topic of conversation as Cox just referred to the upcoming episodes of Daredevil: Born Again as the final season.
D’Onofrio’s reply reassured fans that this isn’t the end, and you can understand why we’re all so jumpy.

When Netflix canceled Daredevil, fans waited in darkness for several years before the show’s triumphant return.
We’ve only had it back since March. So, the last thing we want to hear is that the series is approaching its end.

I mean, it just started! Why is Cox already talking about the conclusion? Well, you should know why.
As I’ve mentioned in other recent MarvelBlog News updates, Daredevil: Born Again isn’t a hit.

The series failed to chart on the Nielsen Streaming Ratings, which is worrisome since virtually all other MCU series did.
Even Echo appeared on the charts, yet Daredevil Redux failed to make a dent. So, the perception is that it’s not a hit.
Cox’s words came across as a tacit admission that Disney+ tried a reboot, but it just didn’t work.
Too much time had passed, and fans had lost interest in the feud between Daredevil and Kingpin.
D’Onofrio’s counter suggested that the story isn’t so simple. So, what’s going on?
Did the Governor Call?
Within hours of this story breaking, Variety chimed in with a bit more context.
You can read the full report here, but the gist is that this story got misreported from the start.
Cox’s comments were misconstrued in that some overly passionate fan read too much into a stray comment.
The actor appeared at a GalaxyCon panel in July and idly referred to this as “the final season.”
Someone could have noted Cox’s much more positive comments about season two, which he describes as his favorite.
I presume he didn’t mean just Daredevil: Born Again since we’ve only had two of those but also Daredevil on Netflix.
If so, calling the yet-to-be aired season the best is very high praise. Cox loves it because:
“One, because it is bad-ass, but also because every suit that we’ve had so far, in some way, is represented in the comics.
“But there’s a particular, something that we do in this final season, that doesn’t exist in the comics. So, it is unique to our show.”
That sounds like Marvel will allow the program to go off on his own and freelance with the story.
We really haven’t had that to date, at least not with the Netflix version of Daredevil.
Jessica Jones enjoyed much more freedom. Not coincidentally, Jessica Jones is a lot better.
So, we’ve got plenty of cause for optimism about Daredevil: Born Again season two, and I was a huge fan of the first season.
Thus, I’d lean toward optimism. Someone else heard “final season” and flipped out.
Let’s Say Maybe
Technically, Cox is correct in that Disney+ hasn’t renewed Daredevil beyond season two.
Given the nature of streaming renewals and cancellations, nobody should ever take anything for granted.
Still, D’Onofrio replied to a quizzical, worried fan by saying, “Good chance there will be a third.”
Since D’Onofrio has already worked on four seasons of MCU Disney+ programming, he would probably know.
Variety adds some other applicable social media quotes as a story follow-up. Here’s D’Onofrio adding context:
“But Charlie and I have discussed and we both agree there’s a very good chance for a third season.”
And here’s another quote about the situation:
“A source close to the production confirms to Variety that while “Daredevil: Born Again” has not officially been renewed, its chances for a third season are promising.”
Disney+ would have an easier call if more people watched Daredevil. So, tell all your friends to watch Daredevil!

We’ve actually had a slow couple of weeks, and I’ve been too busy writing a book to chase down some Spider-Man 4 rumors.
So, I’m taking everything on that front with a grain of salt as insiders parse through Big Bad misinformation.

We did learn that Hollywood veteran Todd Stashwick will play Paladin in Vision Quest.
Also, Orla Brady of Star Trek: Picard will portray F.R.I.D.A.Y. So, that’s a couple of fun Marvel characters involved.

On the MCU film front, Thunderbolts* has finished its theatrical run with a domestic box office of $190 million.
Marvel made the clever attempt to reboot the film as New Avengers, but it wasn’t enough.

The film’s total box office of $382 million has to be a disappointment to Marvel.
The next inflection point occurs on August 27th when the show debuts on Disney+.

Marvel hopes that fans will discover the impeccable quality of Thunderbolts* then.
And the same strategy likely applies to The Fantastic Four: First Steps, which has just died at the box office.

That film started well, but I guess that after the diehards saw it, everyone else thought, “Another Fantastic Four film?”
Coincidentally or not, Marvel will appear at New York Comic Con in October.

After the studio sat out Comic-Con in July, everyone may have reconsidered. Marvel needs some new hype.
On a seemingly unrelated note, Ryan Reynolds has flashed the Daredevil symbol on social media.
