MarvelBlog News for September 14th, 2025
In this week’s MarvelBlog News, Ryan Reynolds confesses, Mark Hamill refuses, and Tom Holland researches.
Marvel’s on everyone’s lips right now. I’ll explain in the latest batch of MCU news.
This Is My Shocked Face

Ryan Reynolds confirmed one of the worst-kept secrets in Hollywood this week.
The actor best known for Deadpool almost missed out on the role that has defined his career.

Sure, Reynolds has been successful in other stuff, but he instinctively knew that Wade Wilson was his calling.
Alas, the actor swung and missed with his first opportunity, as he played Wilson once in a losing effort.

Have you ever watched X-Men Origins: Wolverine? I hope not for your sake.
Even by Hollywood’s shameless cash-grab standards, that one was an absolute trainwreck.

I was one of the many critics who suffered through 100 minutes of stupid, aimlessly wondering what went wrong.
While the film was ostensibly a breakeven project, earning $373 million against a $150 million budget, it was deemed a failure.

A good comic book movie about Wolverine would have earned at least twice that amount.
Consumers sniffed out the film’s quality from the weak trailers and atrocious early word of mouth.

That snuffed Wolverine’s legs, unintentionally wrecking Reynolds in the process.
At the time, everyone connected to the actor knew the truth. He coveted a Wolverine movie.

That same statement applies to Rob Liefeld, the creator of Deadpool, a diehard box office aficionado.
Liefeld was a fan of my old website, and we connected a couple of times.

One thing became clear. It was his dream and Reynolds’ life mission to make a full-length Deadpool movie.
There was just one problem. Reynolds technically played the character in the Wolverine movie.

Yeah, people forget this because it’s such a disposable film, but Reynolds co-starred as Weapon XI.
In simplest terms, imagine if Destiny’s Child had bombed, leaving Beyoncé without a solo career.

That didn’t happen because Reynolds came up with a plan.
A few years after Wolverine’s struggles, the actor recognized that Deadpool wasn’t on anybody’s hotlist.
For that film to get made, it needed to happen soon. Otherwise, he would age out of the project.
Yes, I know that he’s still portraying Deadpool today, but that’s because the character got hot.

If no film had been made in the 2010s, any Deadpool project wouldn’t have involved Reynolds.
Thankfully, we don’t live in that world. And it’s because Reynolds did something untoward.

Marvel
“Some a–hole leaks (the Deadpool footage) online and I’m like, you know, looking at the guy in the mirror brushing my teeth.”
That’s a quote he made at a film festival. The Deadpool footage in question has been a Hollywood mystery for years.

Okay, kind of. Everyone figured it was Reynolds, but he dodged the issue when asked.
In 2012, Tim Miller produced CGI test footage as a mock-up for a live-action Deadpool film.

That’s the footage Reynolds leaked in an attempt to entice Fox to greenlight the project. And it worked!
Apparently, the actor believes that the end justifies the means here, probably because he’s a superstar now.

“And I’m grateful that I listened to that instinct, and I’m grateful that I did the wrong thing in that moment.”
This may seem like an obvious decision today, but let’s remember that Reynolds did something else after Wolverine.

Have you ever watched Green Lantern? Woof! It’s a miracle Reynolds worked again after that.
The fact that we got even one Deadpool movie with him is a miracle…and now we know how it happened.
Marvel Miscellany

If I’m leading with a story from 2012, you KNOW it’s a slow week. Still, a couple of other things happened.
First, Tom Holland confessed how he pitched Spider-Man 4.

At this point, the actor has so much stroke that he could do anything he wanted with Spider-Man.
Right now, Sony isn’t in a position to say no to anything, which makes Holland’s story so much funnier.

The dude could have done anything, and 99 percent of A-list celebrities would have abused that power.
That’s why the term ‘vanity project’ exists. Studios just bite their lip and agree to the dumbest ideas.

Holland is too noble for that, though. He scoured the internet for every Spider-Man post he could find.
Then, when the actor pitched ideas to Sony, he’d use the ones that fans had passionately supported.

Based on this information, Holland may have noticed more hope for Brand New Day than any other story.
Personally, I would have loved Superior Spider-Man, but I guess that’d cause problems about who the star is.

Anyway, it’s nice to know that Holland takes his role seriously and isn’t about to abuse his power.

Finally, in a weird but amusing story, Mark Hamill revealed that he’s got no interest in Marvel.
The actor, who voices a mean Joker in cartoons and the Arkham video games, is apparently a one franchise guy.
Well, I mean film franchises. Sure, he’s cheating on Lucasfilm with Warner Bros., but he made one thing clear.
Mark Hamill claims he’s not interested in Marvel movies, only weird projects that play against his type.

Photo: Marvel Comics
You may wonder, “Well, he was up for anything?” To that, I answer that Disney is quite insular.
Once an actor does well on one project, they tend to get cast again and again at Disney.

Hamill apparently isn’t interested in that cushy deal.
