Laurence Fishburne Doubles Down on Playing Professor Xavier
While Laurence Fishburne made his Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) debut in 2018’s Ant-Man and the Wasp, portraying Dr. Bill Foster/Goliath, if the Emmy-winning actor gets his way, he will soon play a different iconic character.
Earlier this month, Fishburne grabbed headlines when he floated the idea of playing Professor Xavier in Marvel’s upcoming X-Men reboot.

“I know that they’re talking about the X-Men now. So, at this point, I want one of two things. The first thing would be: what do you think about Laurence Fishburne as Professor X?” he asked the crowd at New York Comic Con.
Now, the actor has weighed in again.
“I Am a True Believer”
During a recent interview with Comic Book, Fishburne was asked about his desire to play Professor X. Before getting into the specifics, Fishburne shared some insight into his connection with Marvel.

“I am a true believer in terms of the Marvel space,” Fishburne revealed. “Whether it’s Marvel comic books or the MCU. I was reading comic books at the age of six in New York City, and those writers and those artists were talking about things that were happening in the city that I was growing up in,” he said.
“So, of course, there are many characters in the Marvel Universe that I related to that I wished I could have played when I was younger. But I’m very, very pleased with the way that the movies have been cast. I’m very, very pleased with the way that they have played out. I’m a huge fan of all of those movies.”

Regarding Professor Xavier in particular, Fishburne had this to say:
“Professor X, at the moment, is, I feel, the most appropriate character for me to play at the age that I am at this point. And for the kind of roles that I am known for. It feels like it would be fit for me. So that’s why.”
It Is Unlikely Fishburne Will Get His Wish
While it sounds like Fishburne has a deep appreciation for Marvel lore and would do justice to Professor Xavier, it is unlikely that Marvel would cast the actor in a new role.

To this point, Kevin Feige and his team have shied away from having actors play multiple characters in the MCU. With Fishburne having already established himself as Dr. Foster, playing Professor Xavier probably isn’t in the cards.
