MarvelBlog News for November 9th, 2025
In this week’s MarvelBlog News, we discuss the one often overlooked part of the Marvel empire.
Yes, this week seems like a perfect time to catch up on Marvel gaming news. Let’s get started!
Marvel in 2020s Gaming

The Spider-Man video game series has sold over 60 million copies throughout the decades.
That total amounts to more than $2 billion in revenue, and it’s just one brand.

I’m leading with Spider-Man since this brand has experienced the most gaming success recently.
Marvel’s Spider-Man on PlayStation, which I’ll confess I’ve never played, has neared 23 million in sales.

So, that’s a lot of the brand’s success right there, augmented by its sequels.
Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 have combined for 22 million in sales.

While they’re obviously not as popular as the original, any video game with 10 million in sales is a blockbuster.
Consider that the average current-generation game costs $60 or more, not counting DLC and digital add-ons.

Ergo, Spider-Man has made a scandalous amount of money during the past seven years.
That’s how long ago the first Spider-Man game on PlayStation 4 came out.

Then, the studio added PlayStation 5 and PC versions of the game, the latter of which is extremely popular.
Alas, other franchises haven’t done so well, especially the one that made me drop this kind of content.

Marvel’s Avengers featured tons of bluster prior to its release. Then, it debuted to a collective splat.
To date, the game has sold approximately three million copies, and that’s all it’ll get.

Crystal Dynamics, the developer, delisted Marvel’s Avengers in 2023, making it unavailable for purchase.
First, it totally sucks when developers do this. Second, they wouldn’t do it if the game were a hit.

Marvel’s Avengers was pretty much the opposite of that, losing tens of millions of dollars.

While I speak fondly of Marvel’s Midnight Suns, which features my beloved Nico Minoru, it was a dud, too.
The developer, Firaxis Games via 2K, hasn’t delisted the title yet, but it’s frequently on sale on the Microsoft Store.

In fact, I almost bought a deluxe copy of it for $15 just the other day before changing my mind.
As a fan of Nico, I should be the target audience for it, but the reviews are just blah.

Just as importantly, it’s a pay-to-win game, which players absolutely despise.
Simply stated, Marvel gaming is in a rut, and it would be a catastrophe if not for Spider-Man.

Enter the Wolverine video game, which is still nearly a year away from release.
However, unlike the canceled Black Panther game, we know that Wolverine will come out.

In fact, Marvel executives have happily discussed it a lot lately, with one recent note.
Apparently, Marvel is so pleased with Insomniac, the developer, that this business relationship will be extended.

Haluk Mentes, the General Manager of Marvel Games, performed an interview with Game Informer.
The recently resurrected magazine consists of the same staff as before its demise.

I mention this because they were always exceptional gaming journalists, and we just got a reminder of that.
During the Mentes interview, he provided this juicy tidbit about working with Insomniac:

“Marvel’s Wolverine with our dear friends at Insomniac Games is perhaps the epitome of this philosophy.”
This seems like a good time to mention that Insomniac also developed the three wildly successful Spider-Man games.

Marvel seems aware that it ain’t broke, so they shouldn’t fix it. Then, we have the Wolverine factor.
Since the character remains beloved, an excellent video game based on Logan should sell VERY well.
What’s Next?

The business marriage won’t end there, either, as Insomniac will follow it with a Venom game.
That news shouldn’t surprise anyone who has played Spider-Man 2, as it included a Venom level.

In fact, while playing as Venom, players couldn’t help but notice how fully formed the character is.
So, this idea appears to have been in the offing for at least a few years now, but we’ll wait a bit longer.

After all, Wolverine remains 9-12 months away, and the Venom standalone game will debut afterward.
To a larger point, I suspect that Marvel has settled on Insomniac as its one true video game developer.

After the struggles of Midnight Suns and the abject failure of Marvel’s Avengers, Insomniac is a known quantity.
Marvel knows what it will get from Insomniac, which is a well-made game with a terrific story that’s fun to play.

I think I speak for all of us when I say that I cannot wait to use Wolverine’s Adamantium Claws to start stabbing people.
Anyway, you can read the full interview with Mentes here. It sheds light on Marvel’s excitement.

Given that Disney stated not that long ago that it was stepping back from gaming a bit, news like this is welcome.
