Nia DaCosta Reflects on ‘The Marvels’ Reveals Interesting ‘Doomsday’ Information
While it may sound strange in hindsight, expectations for The Marvels were high leading up to its release.
The 33rd installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), and a sequel to the $1 billion-grossing Captain Marvel, The Marvels saw Brie Larson’s intergalactic hero team up with Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) and Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) to form the franchise’s newest superhero team.

When you throw in the return of Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury, the film seemed like a sure-fire hit.

Unfortunately, that is not how things turned out.
A Box Office Bomb
Bereft of promotion due to the Hollywood strikes, The Marvels crashed and burned at the box office. After delivering the lowest domestic opening ever for an MCU film, the film ended its box office run grossing just $206.1 million.

That number was a far cry from the $307 million that Marvel spent on the film.
Nia DaCosta Reflects on ‘The Marvels’
While The Marvels was both a creative and commercial disappointment, for director Nia DaCosta, the production was still a success. Mostly because of the relationships that she cultivated.

“It’s so interesting because the Marvel machine had so much chatter around it,” DaCosta told Deadline. “But when I look back on it, everyone tried their best. Everyone was trying to make a great film… and I will say I’m really happy to have those relationships.”
Will ‘The Marvels’ Stars Appear in ‘Doomsday’?
Although it seems unlikely that DaCosta will helm another MCU film anytime soon, she still had nothing but good things to say about the franchise.

In fact, the director recently visited the set of Avengers: Doomsday.
“I was just visiting the Avengers set last summer, which was really fun, catching up with the producers, seeing the Russos, and some of my friends were in the movie.”
DaCosta’s admission that she was visiting “friends” on the set of Doomsday has led many fans to speculate that Brie Larson, Iman Vellani, or Teyonah Parris will pop up in the movie.

For now, however, we will have to wait and see.
