Sam Raimi Closes the Door on ‘Spider-Man 4’
Despite the fact that the film was officially canceled 15 years ago, rumors have continued to swirl that a Spider-Man 4 starring Tobey Maguire could still come to fruition.
After years of lying dormant, Sony’s original Spider-Man franchise received new life when Maguire reprised his iconic role as Peter Parker in Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Maguire’s return was so well-received that fans immediately began speculating that he could suit up again for a fourth solo adventure.
Ups and Downs
Those rumors reached a fever pitch in 2024, when Thomas Haden Church, who portrayed Sandman in Spider-Man 3, revealed that he had heard Sam Raimi was working on a fourth installment in the franchise.

While Raimi later dispelled that notion, fans have continued to hold out hope.

Now, however, it sounds like the director may have finally put the last nail in the Spider-Man 4 coffin.
Raimi Closes the Door
During a recent interview with ScreenRant, Raimi was asked about the possibility of helming another Spider-Man film starring Tobey Maguire.

While the director admitted that he still loves the franchise and has a great relationship with Marvel Studios, he explained that he believes the opportunity has passed, as the characters “have gone elsewhere.”
As Raimi noted, Tom Holland has now assumed the Spider-Man mantle.

“Stan Lee’s great character — that a bullpen of writers in New York at Marvel had come up with stories for — he created the character, but so many people contributed, so many artists, that for a brief time I was handed the torch to carry on after 40 years of Spider-Man comics,” Raimi said.

“And then after my three movies, I handed the torch off to someone else. And I think they’ve got to keep running with the storyline and the audience that is now following the torchbearer.”
Will We See Tobey Maguire Again?
While it does not sound like Tobey Maguire will be suiting up for another solo adventure, we may not have seen the last of his Peter Parker.

With the Marvel multiverse set to come together for the events of Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, it feels likely that Maguire could appear again.

For now, however, fans will have to wait and see.
