Sony Is Completely Rebooting the Spider-Man Extended Universe
by Justin Hermes ·
As the Marvel Cinematic Universe gears up to bring its biggest heroes together for Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, Sony is pressing reset on its own Marvel plans.
Following a string of disappointments, including Madame Web, Kraven the Hunter, and Morbius, the studio is moving away from its Spider-Man extended universe and starting fresh.

Sony CEO Tom Rothman shared the update during a recent appearance on The Town podcast with Matt Belloni.
“Where are we in the Spider-Man franchise? Not the animated Spider-Verse. Is the larger Spider-Verse dead?” Belloni asked.
“No,” Rothman replied.

Throughout the rest of the conversation, Belloni revealed that the extended universe would be rebooted with new actors and characters.
The Downfall of Sony’s Spider-Verse
Sony’s Spider-Man Universe launched in 2018 with Venom, a major box-office success. The film would eventually produce two sequels, which failed to live up to the popularity of the original. Nevertheless, Sony pushed forward.

The studio’s goal was to build an interconnected world that could exist alongside the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Although Tom Holland’s Spider-Man never appeared in any of the Sony spinoff films, the projects were reportedly building toward a larger crossover moment.

However, after multiple box office misfires, many of which were met with harsh reviews, Sony has decided to start over.
How the studio ultimately rebuilds its Marvel universe, however, remains to be seen.

What is clear is that Sony is not throwing in the towel. Fans hoping that the end of the Spider-Verse could lead to some sort of deal with Marvel Studios will be sadly disappointed.
