Marvel Comics to Feature Predator Variants in May
In May, a series of Marvel Comics variant covers will feature the Predator. This titular extraterrestrial hunter first appeared in the 1987 movie Predator (and many movies since then, including facing off against the Aliens from the Alien franchise).
The variant covers will feature familiar Marvel Comics superheroes like Miles Morales and Peter Quill coming face to face with the adroit alien hunters, celebrating Marvel’s publishing new Predator (and Alien) comics later this year.
The History of A vs. P Comics
For the past two decades, Dark Horse Comics had published Alien, Predator, and Alien vs. Predator comics. However, in July 2020, Dark Horse announced that Disney was pulling the publishing license to the properties – something that was well within Disney’s rights because they had acquired Fox, the previous holder of the franchises’ respective copyrights.
When Dark Horse held the franchises’ rights, they made some very awesome comics, however. My particular favorites are Archie Vs. Predator Volume 1 (2015) by Alex de Campi, Fernando Ruiz, Rich Koslowski, and Jason Millet and Volume 2 (2019) by de Campi, Robert Hack, Kelly Fitzpatrick, and Jack Morelli.
If you haven’t read this one – and you’re a fan of comic book gore and dark humor – we can’t recommend it enough. It simply must be considered one of the most excellent crossovers in the history of comic books, for one simple reason alone: it makes not one but two convoluted canons confront themselves.
Now that Disney has pulled the rights, Marvel Comics will be making their own brand-new Alien, Predator, and A vs. P stories. Still, to tide us over as we wait for those, they’re releasing various variants featuring the intimidating extraterrestrials.
