Russell Crowe Pulls a Holland, Reveals He’s Zeus
It recently leaked that Russell Crowe is playing Zeus in Thor: Love and Thunder, following weeks of speculation about the Oscar-winning actor’s role in the film. According to Empire, Crowe’s role was supposed to be a secret, except the actor had a Tom Holland moment (formerly known as ripping a Ruffalo) with Melbourne’s JOY Breakfast with The Murphys (hear the full interview at this podcast link).
Russell Crowe Spoiler Alert
In March, Deadline revealed that Crowe was joining the cast of Thor: Love and Thunder to act alongside co-stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, who plays Jane Foster’s Thor, Christian Bale, who plays Gorr the God Butcher, and Matt Damon. Although Crowe’s casting was already public knowledge, his role in the film was supposed to remain a secret.
Crowe discussed his previous experience playing gay characters on screen and casually talked up the fact that he’s finishing his work as ZEUS in Thor 4 on the JOY Breakfast podcast.
Excitingly, Marvel Blog True Believers, he concluded the podcast by telling the hosts that he had to leave to go to his final day of filming for Marvel Studios, saying:
Now, I’m going to get on my bicycle. I’m going to ride to Disney Fox Studio, and I’m going to get the hot tongs out (curling iron), and around about 9:15 I shall be Zeus in Thor 4 this morning. It’s my last day of Zeus-ing about, and I’m going to enjoy it.
Thus, the actor let it slip a world of possibilities that opens with him taking on the role of Zeus in the MCU!
Who Is Zeus?
Zeus’s arrival opens the door to the Olympian gods, as well as the potential debut of Marvel Comic’s version of Hercules! At Marvel Blog, we’re excited to learn the character’s joining the MCU and think Crowe’s the perfect choice – after all, he looks exactly like the Marvel Comics version of Zeus.
If you want to learn a little more about Zeus before the character’s debut onscreen, check out Thor #129 by Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, Vince Colletta, and Artie Simek, in which Thor proposes to Jane Foster and Zeus casts judgement.
Or read an issue of Champions, such as Champions #3 by Tony Isabella, Bill Mantelo, George Tuska, Colleta, and Karen Mantelo. In that issue, the Champions must convince Zeus to let Hercules free!

Thor: Love And Thunder will be released in theaters in May 2022.
