Ring Ring, Kohli!
According to the interview, it all started with a phone call from Marvel Studios!
Kohli told the Times of India that at first, he wasn’t told that the costumes would be for a movie, only that they were searching for outfits for a dance sequence.
At first, Kohli assumed the work was for a non-Marvel movie. But in a follow-up email, an ersatz movie name was used – common practice during the production of big-ticket movies (for example, the Tom Holland-starring Spider-Man trilogy, directed by Jon Watts, has used a Seinfeld-themed codename for each of the three movies).
However, when Kohli arrived at the fabled Pinewood Studios and realized he was meeting with the heads of Marvel’s costume department, he understood that he had suddenly become part of a bigger universe!
Kohli was responsible for contributing the costumes of the 52 dancers in the scene… and in case you don’t realize, 52 is an important number! It represents the number of weeks in a year (and that’s the reason there’s 52 in a deck of cards, Marvel Blog True Believers)!
But it wasn’t just the backup designers that benefited from Kohli’s expertise: as he told the Times of India, he helped contribute to Marvel superhero Kumail Nanjiani’s costume too, thanks to the fact that he helped another costume designer with that outfit’s embroidery work.
In fact, Kohli revealed to the Times of India that thanks to the fact that his costume work had him on set for four days, he was even able to meet and interact with Nanjiani a few times, even sharing some common interests.
Eternals Arrive in November
You’ll be able to see all 52 dances (plus Nanjiani’s outfit) when Marvel’s Eternals arrives in movie theaters on November 5th, 2021.
