REVIEW: Uncover Espionage in Demon Days: Mariko #1
In Demon Days: Mariko #1 by Peach Momoko, with English adaptation and dialogue by Zack Davisson and lettering by Ariana Maher, readers will re-enter the world that they were introduced to through Demon Days: X-Men #1. And as the story begins to unspool, it uncovers some interesting espionage!
The Yashida Saga: Part One
Just like with Demon Days: X-Men #1, Demon Days: Mariko #1 takes place in a world that blends Japanese folklore with the Marvel Comics universe.
One of the first things you will notice when you open Demon Days: Mariko #1 is Momoko’s distinctive art style. You have also seen her work on her arresting variant covers – or on the body of some lucky person who scored a tattoo from the artist before Momoko switched careers – which have adorned many of the comics we’ve reviewed here at Marvel Blog!
Just like in the first issue, one of my favorite parts of this story was spotting the familiar Marvel characters in their parallel universe forms. My personal favorite for this issue was Black Widow, who gets an appealing incarnation in this issue.
Better Back Matter
Plus, just like the first issue, Demon Days: Mariko #1 includes some excellent back matter: the Yokai Files.
These two pages give you details about the inspirations behind some of the Yokai who appear in the Demon Days story, including the mythological history of these monsters!
This intriguing nonfiction information about the Yokai helps add texture to the story. Plus, the moment that you finish reading the back matter you’ll find yourself flipping back to enjoy the story again with the new context! Besides, who wouldn’t want to take a second glance at Momoko’s beautiful soft pastels and heavy inks at least one more time!
More Demon Days on the Horizon
This isn’t the end of the Demon Days story! The next part of the Yashida Saga, Demon Days: Cursed Web #1, will be arriving at your local comic shop in September 2021.
Judging by the cover, this story will feature both Mystique and Ghost-Spider, so you can bet I can’t wait to get my hands on it, Marvel Blog True Believers!
