REVIEW: A Dirty Whodunnit in The Winter Guard #1
In The Winter Guard #1 by Ryan Cady, Djibril Morissette-Phan, Jan Bazaldua, Federico Blee, and Ariana Maher, with a main cover by Toni Infante, we get a story about Russia’s answer to the Avengers, the Winter Guard! This team of Russian superheroes has analogues for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, and they’re facing off against Yelena Belova and the Red Guardian.
If you want to see more of Yelena and Red Guardian after watching Marvel Studios’ Black Widow, this issue has just what you’re looking for!

Black Widow
The Winter Guard #1 is ideal for those who saw Black Widow and wanted to know more about the two biggest breakout stars, Yelena (played by Florence Pugh) and the Red Guardian (David Harbour).

In the movie (and in promotions around the movie), this duo had chemistry to spare, so why wouldn’t you want to see more?

The comic puts them up against a full team of Soviet Super Heroes (including Ursa Major, who technically appeared in the movie as well).

While I didn’t immediately recognize all of the Russian superheroes who appeared in this issue, I enjoyed getting to see them in action!

By the end of this story, you will have a burning need to read the next issue. No spoilers, but suffice to say that there is quite a mystery that unfolds by this issue’s climax!

Plus, this issue did a great job of keeping you guessing about where it was going next! By luring you in with the Avengers doppelgangers, it’s easy to forget that these characters are much more disposable than our usual roster of heroes (outside of recent What If…? episodes, anyway).
