REVIEW: Spinning An Engaging Tale in Demon Days: Cursed Web #1
In Demon Days: Cursed Web #1, we get the next chapter in this intriguing alternate Marvel Universe tale, with a breathtaking story and art by Peach Momoko, an English adaptation and dialogue by Zack Davisson, and lettering by Ariana Maher. With the introduction of more Yokai versions of familiar Marvel Comics characters, this story continues to illuminate an engaging and unique superhero story.
Cursed Web #1
This story gives us a new version of Spider-Gwen (or Ghost-Spider, depending on the continuity and chronology), which is essentially enough to sell me on the issue in and of itself! I am a huge fan of the Gwen Stacy who ends up becoming a webslinger, and Demon Days: Cursed Web #1 proves that that’s true no matter what the universe.
The pages that center this version of Spider-Gwen are my favorite in the issue, and maybe that’s because we had a pet (kinda) Black Widow when I was growing up. Filled with webbing and detailed drawings of arachnids, these pages really let you see what Momoko has in mind for this version of the character.
With a jacket that says it all (and will hopefully be made by a cosplayer), we get a hint at who this new Spider-Gwen is from the moment she wraps the letterman jacket around her shoulders. And she plays an essential role in this story, fist bump.
Rising Storm #1
And at the conclusion of this story, you get to meet two characters who will be headlining the next chapter of this unique series, Demon Days: Rising Storm #1: Thor and Ororo!
Both of these characters receive a very unique interpretation by Momoko, so much so that I had a visceral (but very positive) reaction when I first saw them on the page. Furthermore, they promise the foundation for a very exciting fourth chapter in this long-running series, which will arrive at your local comic shop on December 1st, 2021!
Demon Days
In addition to Demon Days: Rising Storm #1, December will also see the release of Demon Days: X-Men Creator’s Cut, a black and white version of the first issue in this series (just in case you need to catch up).
