Shang-Chi Smashes Labor Day Box Office Records!
In an article posted to The Hollywood Reporter on Saturday, September 4th, 2021, it was reported that Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, the newest Marvel Cinematic Universe movie that was released exclusively in theaters on Friday, September 3rd, 2021, is poised to smash Labor Day box office records!
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings
According to THR, the first MCU movie to exclusively debut in theaters in two years earned nearly $30 million domestically on its first day in box offices, plus another $23.4 million overseas. As such, projections for the four-day Labor Day weekend timeframe anticipate the movie’s earnings at between $75 million and $85 million.
As far as September theatrical releases go, only two other films have topped Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings domestic opening: 2017’s It and 2019’s It: Chapter Two.
Plus, the previous Labor Day record holder was 2007’s Halloween, which earned $30.6 million over the four-day time frame (which is not too much more than the $29.6 million Shang-Chi earned in just one day, Marvel Blog True Believers, so we think it’s possible the MCU film might break that record).
Currently, projections put Shang-Chi’s three-day earnings at $60 million, making it the second-biggest three-day opening of 2021 (behind Black Widow, which earned $80.3 million over a three day period).
Candyman
Meanwhile, Candyman, the horror movie directed by Nia DaCosta, who is directing the upcoming MCU movie The Marvels, is arriving at number two at the box office, earning $2.8 million on Friday night (its second weekend at the box office).
Having earned a cumulative $30.3 million so far, Candyman is expected to garner another $13 million over the four-day Labor Day weekend. That means good things for the future of the Captain Marvel franchise, Marvel Blog True Believers!
