Shang-Chi Mid-Credits Scene
The first Shang-Chi mid-credits scene picks up where the movie’s ending left off: Wong (Benedict Wong) opened a portal and interrupted Shang-Chi (Simu Liu) and Marvel Studios Katy (Awkwafina) as they were having drinks with their friends from the beginning of the movie.
Remember: those SF friends that thought Shaun and Katy were kinda deadbeats, like so much so that they don’t believe they could ever save the world… even after they finally save the world? Yeah, those people.
Well, Wong is there to prove those friends wrong. These are our new heroes.
Plus, there is a very important narrative reason that Wong summoned the duo: when Shang-Chi took the Ten Rings from his father, Wenwu (Tony Leung), who had been using the set of artifacts for many generations, they did something they’d never done before: they activated a beacon in deep space!
To find out what’s going wrong out there, Wong hasn’t only summoned Katy and Shang-Chi, he’s also got Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) and Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) appearing via hologram.
However, neither of these experts can help shed any light on the mystery of who is sending a message to the Ten Rings from deep space!
There are loads of possibilities here: we have seen many extraterrestrial civilizations in the Marvel Cinematic Universe at this point, and there are new possibilities, too, like characters associated with Eternals or, heck, even an episode of What If…?
In addition to learning that the Ten Rings are connected to some mysterious element of the Cosmic Marvel Universe, we also discovered that Banner’s arm still hasn’t recovered from when Hulk snapped the Infinity Gauntlet (that’s gotta sting)… but maybe that explains Banner’s connection to Wong, last time fans saw the Hulk was in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame alongside Doctor Strange and Wong at Tony Stark’s funeral!
And we also learned that Captain Marvel’s hair continues to look incredible!
What’s Next for Shang-Chi?
What will be found at the site that is calling out to the Ten Rings? Because the artifacts are new to the MCU and not based on anything we’ve seen in the panels of Marvel Comics, it’s anyone’s guess!
