James Gunn Shot Unused Footage for GotG Prequel Shorts
Prepare for heartbreak, Marvel Blog True Believers: it turns out that we almost got a series of one-shot shorts that led into the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie. On top of this, this idea got so far into development that director James Gunn had even shot some of the footage for the Rocket & Groot short before it was scrapped!
The Story of Marvel Studios
The fact that these shorts almost came to be comes directly from none other than Marvel Studios Head Boss in Charge Kevin Feige himself, in the new book The Story of Marvel Studios: The Making of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In that book, Feige is quoted as saying that the shorts almost came to pass (along with more tantalizing details about how Drax, Gamora, and Peter Quill would have been introduced by them).
Soon, Screen Rant wrote up the revelation, which led to Gunn ReTweeting the article and saying that although he had basically forgotten shooting the footage, he had indeed done so back before Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 1 was released in 2017. The shorts would have introduces the unfamiliar characters to an unsuspecting audience.

Now, several years later, the idea of needing one-shots to introduce the members of the Guardians team seems hard to believe… but that’s just the magic of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Marvel Blog True Believers!
Gunn went on to reveal that only the Rocket & Groot script was completed, but he still considers the story it tells – how Groot and Rocket met – to be canon. Furthermore, the short had a role for Alan Tudyk.
While we may never get to see this early Rocket & Groot footage, Gunn has supplied us with plenty more. Both the Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! attraction at Disney California Adventure and the upcoming Cosmic Rewind at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida.
