REVIEW: Them Versus Us in Shang-Chi #6
In Shang-Chi #6 by Gene Luen Yang, Dike Ruan, Tríona Farrell, and Travis Lanham, with a main cover by Leinil Francis Yu & Sunny Gho, all of the pieces from the previous five issues of this story arc fall into place! But can Shang-Chi possibly stand against the mighty Avengers?

In this issue, all of the characters who Shang-Chi has faced off against over the course of his eponymous comic come back once again… and they continue to be filled with suspicion about the new leader of the Five Weapons Society! Throughout this storyline, we have seen the Avengers we know and love – like Captain America, Spider-Man, Iron Man, and even Wolverine – act suspicious of Shang-Chi!

I loved this storyline, especially since, in the world outside your window, it’s not unheard of for someone who is not the bad guy to get labeled “the bad guy”… Doubly so if, like Shang-Chi, you are not white! This storyline really leans into the propensity certain privileged people have to label marginalized people to be “the Other,” and then use that as a justification to mistreat them, or to justify taking away their power.

And that’s partially what the Avengers are trying to do here! Fortunately, our hero is able to determine from whence the betrayal originated before things go too far with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes… but it’s clear that, in spite of the fact that Shang-Chi himself made every right decision, neither Tony Stark nor Mr. Fantastic trust him at the end of this issue. This is a frustrating but very accurate detail which I wholly appreciated!

While this story arc may have concluded, Shang-Chi #7 will arrive at your local comic shop in December, and it looks as though we’ll be seeing more of Shang-Chi’s mother, who he rescued in issue #4.
