RETRO REVIEW: Kate Goes West in Hawkeye Annual (2013) #1
In Hawkeye Annual (2013) #1 by Matt Fraction, Javier Pulido, Matt Hollingsworth, and Clayton Cowles, readers get to find out just went down with Kate after she left the Big Apple a few issues ago… and it’s all tied up in the fallout from the adventure in Madripoor that Kate and Clint took part in way back in Hawkeye (2012) #4!
Hawkeye Annual (2013) #1
You may be confused by the name of this issue, but never fear, Marvel Blog True Believers: we have you covered. An “Annual” is a special issue that is published once a year. Often, it will be a “special story,” focusing on a character who doesn’t always get the spotlight, or revealing a secret piece of information about the narrative.
An annual issue is sometimes even oversized, meaning “more than the usual 20-odd pages,” and may include enticing back matter.
In Hawkeye Annual #1, we get to find out what happened when Kate and Pizza Dog left New York City and headed to the Best Coast… and it ends up being tied up with the fallout from some of the earlier issues, when Kate ran afoul of Madame Masque in Madripoor.
This issue featured some very cool art. I’ve mentioned in some of my earlier Retro Reviews of Hawkeye (2012) that many of these issues develop their own internal “language,” and this one is no exception, with a cartoon-y version of Kate appearing to coach the “real world” version of Kate throughout the issue.
This was a fun and funny little detail that helped ensure this Annual stood out from the other 22 issues of Hawkeye!
