Aja on Hawkeye
As soon as you see the arresting covers Aja put together for Hawkeye, you understand why they are held in such high regard among the comic-loving community. Each of the twenty have their own unique charm, and yet they are all united thanks to the unique aesthetic which defines Aja’s work generally, and his work on Hawkeye, specifically.
You may have noticed that, although there are twenty-two issues in the main 2012 Hawkeye series, there are only twenty covers. That’s because issue 10 and issue 12 both have interior art and covers by Francesco Francavilla. When you see these covers, you immediately recognize that they they possess a different style than the rest of the Hawkeye covers.
And the twenty-third issue to consider is the Hawkeye Annual. This issue featured Javier Pulido on both interior art and the cover (however, it’s worth noting that the minimalist aesthetic favored by the Annual’s cover seems to hit closer to the style favored by Aja’s Hawkeye covers than the two covers created by Francavilla).

After Aja did these arresting covers for Hawkeye, he went on to provide the covers for the 2015 Scarlet Witch series, which was written by James Robinson and featured a different interior artist on each issue. While I enjoyed the rotating artist aspect of this series, I particularly appreciated that Aja’s covers were able to provide some aesthetic continuity for the excellent title (which, like the 2012 Hawkeye, you can read on Marvel Unlimited right now).
