AGENT 19 ALERT: About That Hawkeye Spoiler
Have you had a chance to watch all six episodes of Hawkeye on Disney+? The final addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2021 arrived for streaming on Wednesday, December 22nd, 2021.
If you haven’t had a chance to watch the season finale of Hawkeye and you want to remain unspoiled, Marvel Blog True Believers, then make like a super spy and burn this article before reading!
Agent 19
In the panels of Marvel Comics, Agent 19 is an alias for one of the most skilled superspies that S.H.I.E.L.D. has to offer: Mockingbird! Furthermore, on Earth-616, Bobbi Morse and Clint Barton have more baggage than you might expect: they’re divorced from one another. Mockingbird is Hawkeye’s ex-wife!
The two have a long, interesting, and complicated history. For example, in one of my favorite storylines featuring the two characters in Marvel Comics, the two are both on the West Coast Avengers team, but friction causes Hawkeye to leave… and he goes on to help found the Great Lakes Avengers, a team I truly hope we one day get to see on-screen in the MCU.
However, the revelation that Clint’s wife, Laura Barton (Linda Cardellini), is none other than Agent 19 raises some questions. For one thing, the character was played by Adrianne Palicki on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. However, between the revelation that Laura is Agent 19 in Hawkeye and the apparent confirmation that Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) was never resurrected in Loki, it seems more and more like S.H.I.E.L.D. is canon no more.
In an interview with Marvel.com, Hawkeye director Rhys Thomas said, “We should know more about [Laura]. There’s more to her than just staying at home with the kids. It was a fun little thing to tease out over the season and again a nice little payoff that hopefully promises more of a character planted at the end.”
Mockingbird Doppelgӓngers
So just what’s going on, Marvel Blog True Believers? Is Palicki out as Agent 19 and Cardellini in? Or are both individual characters who have shared the Agent 19 codename over the years (just as we’ve seen several characters claim the mantle of Captain America)?
