REVIEW: Greatest Soule Hits in Star Wars #19
In Star Wars #19 by Charles Soule, Marco Castiello, Rachelle Rosenberg, and Clayton Cowles, with a main cover by Carlo Pagulayan, Jason Paz, & Rain Beredo, we get a story that sees Luke Skywalker himself visiting some new locations… but seeing some familiar faces while he’s there.
“Dangerous Turn”
As is standard for Star Wars stories that are written by Soule, this issue has plenty of callbacks to both the writer’s own work on the Star Wars galaxy, and just references to Star Wars lore in general.
Few writers have the same degree of mastery of Star Wars canon as Soule, and fewer still know how to weave it into the narrative. Soule proves he has the goods in the regard on just about every issue he writes, and Star Wars #19 is no exception.
My personal favorite reference is a perennial favorite for Soule, too: Grakkus the Hutt! There are also references to Star Wars canon mainstays like holocrons and the smuggler’s moon of Nar Shaddaa. We also get plenty of good droid in this issue, thanks to R2-D2.
The art is also excellent, both in terms of the ships and the characters. Both are instantly recognizable, while still being presented in novel poses and situations. The colors do a great job of bringing a galaxy far, far away to life (in a few instances, I even felt like I was once again visiting Batuu at Galaxy’s Edge).
On top of all this, I thought the last page reveal was suitably exciting… What can I say, I am a fan of the diminutive green muppet characters in a galaxy far, far away!
