REVIEW: Get Ahold of the Ever-Lovin’ The Thing #2
In The Thing #2 by Walter Mosely, Tom Reilly, Jordie Bellaire, and Joe Sabino, with a main cover by Reilly, we get the next chapter in this scintillating new series (named one of Marvel Blog’s Top 12 Comics of 2021 based on the first issue alone)… and while you may expect it to zig, instead it zags! Don’t miss the sophomore issue of this outstanding story, Marvel Blog True Believers.
The Thing #2
This issue opens with the fistfight between The Thing and Brusque that we saw coming at the conclusion of the last entry in the story. And I mean… let’s look at this fight for a moment, Marvel Blog True Believers:
Wow! The shadows on the wall! The impeccable color! The words shouted by Brusque threatening to burst out of his word balloon! What an opening splash.
The comic does not let up from there! While you probably think you know how this issue will play out, it will surprise you: no spoilers, but suffice to say that Brusque is not being set-up as the villian you think he will be.
And I also enjoyed the “throwback vibe” that continues to be embraced by this story. Set during “a classic era,” this story is set in the history of the Fantastic Four… and Mosely uses that to his extreme advantage, revealing a version of The Thing who feels almost like he’s been pulled from our nostalgic memories of the character. This is Marvel Comics at its finest!
Ever-Lovin’ Series
In addition to the main cover by Reilly, there was also a variant cover by Kevin Eastman (co-creator of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) and Paul Mounts, which is the one I ended up picking up. Pretty neat, Marvel Blog True Believers!
