That Fan-Favorite ‘Eternals’ Romance Almost Never Happened
The divisive MCU entry has found its way onto Disney+ this month, and with its debut on the streaming service, we visit the story of how that fan-favorite Eternals romance almost never happened.
An ambitious project that explored the very origin of the MCU as we understand it, Eternals has slowly become one of the most important Marvel films to date.
Following ten near-immortal beings, it explores the Eternals and their mission to protect humanity from the relentless and unchallenged Deviant threat.
With a narrative spanning centuries, and the Celestials finally making their MCU debut, the film is a very beautiful story about family and the nature of doing what’s right.
Although the plot felt very full, fans have shown a love for two characters whose chemistry on the screen is near magnetic: that being Druig and Makkari.
What is interesting, however, is that fan-favorite Eternals romance almost never happened, but was a beautiful addition to the story that was unavoidable by the film’s director, Chloe Zhao.
Insider.com reported the director’s remarks on the developing romance during the film’s global press tour, for which she stated, “I don’t know if Lauren [Ridloff], you remember, it was your first time meeting Barry, the two of you started to just riff…You started to improvise.”
Zhao continued, “And I go, ‘whoa, whoa, whoa. Wait, what’s happening? Sparks everywhere. Initially, that was not the intention, I think really it was from you guys meeting that we saw that, and go, ‘maybe we should play into it.'”

the way makkari and druig didn’t see each other for centuries but still fell into their rhythm of being flirty with each other I love them sm 😭😭😭 pic.twitter.com/GybcELL3W8— ⧗ (@waltersndanvers) November 5, 2021
The willingness of the Academy Award-winning director to follow the chemistry of her actors and embrace the Druig and Makkari connection paid dividends, as many fans perceive their inherent and natural romance as more convincing than Ikaris and Sersi’s — which was the linchpin for the film.
The natural chemistry was clearly evident, and it added subtlety to their performance, with space for the audience to imagine what more could be to the story for these two immortal beings.
I believe in #Druig and #Makkari supremacy. pic.twitter.com/Gw9rLWcS12
