MarvelBlog News for May 26th, 2024
We’ve had a huge week for Marvel.
A highly anticipated film gained a writer, another series firmed its release schedule, and a new Marvel story arrived in a different format.
We’ll discuss all these things plus Deadpool & Wolverine in MarvelBlog News.
Vision Debuts in 2026
The remarkable part of WandaVision was how well it established several different new characters.
Arguably the most famous of them is Agatha Harkness, whose next story will be revealed later this year in Agatha All Along.
However, the most intriguing of them is probably the so-called White Vision, the blank government android.
As a reminder, during the events of WandaVision, we learned that Vision died for sure at the end of Avengers: Infinity War.
Frustrated, the American government created its own synthezoid, a carbon copy of Vision save for two elements: color and soul.
The underlying concept of Vision is that the Infinity Stone embedded in his head makes him more human.
Without that Infinity Stone, the Vision clone completely lacked all the elements that made the original so special.
Thankfully, WandaVision solved that problem by having the two Visions meet and share their thoughts.
Now, the empty vessel version of Vision apparently possesses most, if not all, the knowledge of the original.
That’s the setting for a fascinating story, as Vision loves Wanda, but the Scarlet Witch has kinda gone crazy.
While Agatha All Along works as the first sequel to WandaVision, the hope all along has been that we’d get more than one.
Not a Vision Quest
Sure enough, Variety confirms that the Vision series will debut on Disney+ in 2026.
This story was pretty much confirmed already, but now we have a timeline and the name of the showrunner.
Terry Matalas, who previously worked on Star Trek: Picard on Paramount+, is now in charge of Vision Quest.
Well, we’re apparently not calling the show Vision Quest now, but that’s what it is.
Matalas is an excellent choice because he earned a WGA nomination for Picard.
Before that, the writer helmed the excellent 12 Monkeys for four seasons on SyFy.
So, the Vision standalone series is in good hands. With Disney+ offering a timeline, we’ll at least know when to expect the show.
The problem with several Disney+ series during the pandemic is that Marvel announced them, only for them to get stuck in purgatory.
Just last week, I mentioned the odd timelines for Ironheart and Wonder Man, both of which really should come out this year.
Neither one will, and Wonder Man isn’t even certain to debut in 2025, which is remarkable for a series that finished filming in April.
Therefore, I’m happy that we at least have a timeline for the Vision series. That’s a step in the right direction for Marvel.
X-Citing News
I’m not really an X-pun guy as a rule, but this one justifies the weak joke.
There legitimately is exciting news involving the debut of The Mutants in the MCU.
That’s something fans have anticipated since Disney first acquired Marvel in 2019, which is five years ago now.
While we’re probably still three years away from the X-Men movie debuting in the MCU, there’s at least forward progress.
Marvel has hired Michael Lesslie to work on the first screenplay for X-Men ’27. And no, that’s not the name.
That’s what I’m jokingly calling it since the soaring popularity of X-Men ’97 is what has lit the fire here.
Now that Marvel (and Disney) executives recognize the demand for the X-Men, they’re pushing harder to introduce The Mutants.
Lesslie also has some personal momentum, having recently written the script for Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes.
Still, before you get your hopes too high, please remember the Fantastic Four debacle.
We’ll probably spend the next 18 months discussing casting members for the X-Men, and most of them will be wrong.
Then, we have the side issue of determining which Mutants will appear as the core cast in this film.
Remember that literally hundreds of characters have been X-Men or team off-shoots over the years.
So, none of this is likely to be set in stone for a while, and that’s before we factor in the Deadpool & Wolverine chaos.
All the red herrings from that film are likely to wreak more confusion, although I wouldn’t put it past Marvel if a couple were real.
To a larger point, any forward movement on an X-Men movie is a huge positive.
Marvel Miscellany
First, let’s talk about this trailer.
What If…? – An Immersive Story isn’t a title a lot of people will play, at least not at first. It’s exclusive to the Apple Vision Pro.
That’s the 1980s equivalent of saying you can only play it in a DeLorean.
Still, we should focus on what this update reflects, which is Marvel’s first significant foray into augmented reality.
Players can spend an hour living out their Marvel fantasies while Wongers and The Watcher watch…and hopefully help.
I cannot calibrate how big a deal this story is since the Apple Vision Pro is so niche. So, stay tuned!
Speaking of animated series, Cristin Milioti has joined the cast of Hit Monkey season two.
As a reminder, she proved to be the mother in How I Met Your Mother. Also, yes, we’re getting a season two of Hit Monkey.
Finally, we have some fascinating updates involving Deadpool & Wolverine.
For starters, Ryan Reynolds has taken the unusual step of providing a disclaimer about the film.
He’s a very funny man. But he’s not alone in the other new clip this week.
That’s a not-so-subtle reminder that tickets are now on sale for Deadpool & Wolverine…and you should act fast if you’re going!
I mean, obviously, you’re going. So, you need to buy tickets soon because Deadpool & Wolverine is pacing to be the biggest R-rated opening ever.
In fact, the film broke Fandango’s 2024 record for best first-day ticket sales. This one’s gonna be a juggernaut.
