Ryan Reynolds Had the Weight of the Marvel World on His Shoulders- Then Hugh Jackman Put on THAT Suit
Just days after Deadpool & Wolverine surpassed 2019’s Joker to become the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time, Ryan Reynolds took to Instagram to pay tribute to his friend and co-star Hugh Jackman.
The story of Jackman making the snap decision to join Reynolds in the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film has become legendary. Six years after his Marvel story seemingly came to the perfect ending in Logan, Jackman decided that he wanted to suit up again.
Jackman’s subsequent call to inform Reynolds of his decision would not only change the course of Marvel history, but it also may have saved the Deadpool franchise.

“On August 14th, 2022, @thehughjackman stopped his car to call me,” Reynolds explained in his Instagram post.
“He’d been having a crappy week… he’d had the flu, two flat tires and some random idiot egged his house. But what happened next, happened fast. He told me he wanted to bring The Wolverine back.”
Reynolds and Shawn Levy Were Feeling the Pressure
Before the release of Deadpool & Wolverine, Reynolds revealed that he and Shawn Levy were having a tough time developing the third Deadpool film. In fact, at one point, the project seemed unlikely to see the light of day. Then, Jackman called.
While Jackman’s return gave Reynolds and Levy a clear vision for Deadpool’s next adventure, they were still nervous.
“Months later, he not only brought Wolvie back into the light, he’d (at long last) wear the iconic yellow suit,” Reynolds continued.
“[Shawn Levy] and I didn’t talk about it much, but we were feeling a TON of pressure; worrying about how we walk these characters into the MCU, worrying about all of our secret characters STAYING secret — along with so many moving parts. But when Hugh stepped onto set in THAT SUIT… everyone knew something special was happening. I remember thinking everything was gonna be okay.”
Reynolds’ Touching Tribute to Jackman
In the end, Reynolds had nothing to worry about. Deadpool & Wolverine was a triumph of Reynolds, Jackman, and Levy. The film has now crossed the $1 billion barrier, become the highest-grossing R-rated film ever, and delivered a lifeline to the flailing Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
Looking back on the experience, Reynolds had nothing but praise for his friend.
“For months of filming and 100 years of editing and post production, I had a front row seat to WOLVERINE. Watching and learning from my friend and favourite actor. Two things can be true: 1) Sometimes I eat too much sugar, and secretly egg his house so I can feel something. And 2) I can be both a fan and friend, simultaneously,” his post continued.
“I don’t know anyone more thoughtful, and classy than Hugh. He’ll do anything for someone he loves. He’ll do anything for someone he just met.”
THE X-Man
In the end, Reynolds said, Jackman delivered for his friends and fans alike.
“In Deadpool & Wolverine Hugh didn’t just make dreams come true for fans of Wolverine. He made MY dreams come true too. He is THE X-Man.”
