MarvelBlog News for November 24th, 2024
Kevin Feige just revealed the plans for The Mutants, while Sony weighs its Spider options, and the Young Avengers take a cruise.
This is an odd week for MarvelBlog News.
The Mutants Are Coming
During Brazil’s version of D23, Kevin Feige made some fascinating remarks that we discussed last week.
Then, he added some more detailed context at the Disney APAC Content Showcase in Singapore.
The leader of Marvel stated the following: “The whole story of Secret Wars really leads us into a new age of mutants.”
Then, he added that the stories will feature “some X-Men players that you might recognize.”
Feige also provides a timeline, suggesting “you will see that continues in our next few movies with some X-Men players that you might recognize.”
Clearly excited, Marvel’s head enthuses, “Again, [it’s] one of those dreams come true. We finally have the X-Men back.”
So, fans have wondered for more than five years when the X-Men would debut in the MCU.
As a reminder, Disney purchased Fox’s assets in early 2019. As part of that transaction, Marvel reacquired film licensing for the X-Men.
Fans have awaited their introduction to the MCU ever since then, with only one film to show for the delay.
That title, The New Mutants, wasn’t even a part of the MCU but instead an oft-delayed project left over from the Fox era.
So, Feige and his team have waited patiently to find a window to introduce The Mutants. That day is fast approaching.
By “fast,” I should add that it’ll be sometime after 2027, though. Remember that this is the scheduled release window for Avengers: Secret Wars.
Thus, everything we’re discussing here is somewhat premature in the greater scheme.
The soonest we should expect a true X-Men title of any sort is 2028, barring something unforeseen. And even that year appears optimistic.
More about The Mutants
Feige indicated that the various Mutants could start debuting in the MCU soon, which makes sense.
After all, Deadpool & Wolverine introduced that possibility by ending the timelines for all the Fox versions of the characters.
At this point, Deadpool & Wolverine themselves are literally the only two remaining characters from Fox’s Marvel cinematic universe.
So, with the path cleared, Marvel is free to start anew, with Feige hinting it’ll happen soon.
That’s an interesting proclamation in that three Marvel stories will debut over the next eight months.
They are Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts*, and then The Fantastic Four: First Steps in July 2025, which introduces Phase Six.
You could make an argument for any of these three films to add Mutants characters, with The Fantastic Four being the most interesting.
Remember that this film occurs in an alternate universe at a different time.
If Mutants appear there, they’d have to transition to the regular MCU universe, which shouldn’t be a problem.
I mean, the Fantastic Four are about to do it, right? Anyway, Feige’s opening up about the characters is a sign in and of itself.
Ordinarily tight-lipped, Feige wouldn’t be doing this unless news were about to break soon-ish.
I wonder whether we may get a Mutant sighting in an upcoming trailer, just as Marvel has spoiled some other surprises in trailers for The Marvels and Deadpool & Wolverine.
To a larger point, plans appear to be in place for a Mutant Saga that could comprise later phases of the MCU.
Don’t be surprised if the Mutants become among the most essential characters in the MCU over the next decade.
More Sony Intrigue
Hoo boy. The rumors circling Sony right now are utterly chaotic, reflective of a company being riddled with indecision.
Specifically, Sony may have rewritten essential elements of the third Spider-Verse film in the aftermath of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
Such changes would indicate a change in vision from the original plans, which is rarely a good sign for something meticulously planned.
As previously discussed, Lord & Miller appear to be fighting with Sony across the board, best demonstrated by the termination of their TV deal.
Now, we’ve got hints that Sony is meddling with the story for a third film in its wildly successful franchise, which is just…wow.
Part of the reason for Sony’s panic mode is that the planning phase for Spider-Man 4 could be going better.
And that’s me being polite. At least one insider believes that Sony may need to delay principal photography until 2026.
Their timeline aligns with my philosophy that Zendaya and Tom Holland have full schedules already for 2025.
So, a delay has always struck me as likely, although one of such length would eliminate the possibility of a 2026 theatrical release.
I wonder whether Sony’s meddling with Spider-Verse 3 reflects the studio’s concern that it’s gonna have a financial shortfall without a Spider-Man film soon.
Not coincidentally, Sony itself has published some documentation that hints of a meeting between Spider-Man and Venom in Spider-Man 4.
That sure seems like a move designed to enhance interest in the project in the face of rumors suggesting turmoil.
Stay tuned on this one, as the story is brimming with intrigue.
Marvel Miscellany
Well, I didn’t expect to say this, but the Young Avengers have made their official MCU debut. And it happened on a boat.
Disney unveiled its newest cruise ship, the Disney Treasure.
During a preliminary sailing, guests watched the new Worlds of Marvel show.
To their surprise and delight, they witnessed the first team-up of America Chavez, Riri Williams, and Cassie Lang. I’m dead serious.
According to Marvel, these stories are canon. So, there you have it. The Young Avengers now exist in the MCU.
Almost immediately afterward, a former writer at Collider suggested that a Young Avengers television show is happening soon.
If this person is correct, a Young Avengers television series will start filming early in 2025, which means just a couple of months from now.
None of this is confirmed by anyone at Marvel, but the timelines all make sense.
Finally, we have this. It’s Ryan Reynolds teasing a Deadpool holiday special, a money idea if ever I heard one.
