MarvelBlog News for December 1st, 2024
This week, Agatha Harkness signals she’s out, while Wanda Maximoff may be ready to return.
We’ll cover these stories plus some potential turmoil happening with a pair of 2025 MCU titles.
Can We Trust a Known Liar?
Kathryn Hahn is definitely enjoying her moment in the sun.
After many years of being a background player in some of your favorite movies (Anchor-Man) and TV shows (Parks & Rec), Hahn has soared recently.
She’s the living embodiment of needing 25 years to become an overnight success, as demonstrated by the popularity of Agatha All Along.
Alas, Hahn recently indicated that we shouldn’t get too attached to the character.
Despite rumors flying about the next chapter in the story between Agatha Harkness and the Maximoff family, Hahn just dumped cold water on the idea.
If the actress is to be believed – and I don’t think she is — Hahn has said her goodbyes to the MCU.
To me, that would be like the Chicago Bears suddenly being good in close games in that it’s utterly beyond the realm of possibility.
Still, Hahn performed an interview with the Los Angeles Times, she utterly the following deeply alarming sentence:
“In my mind, this was a beautiful and satisfying way to say goodbye to this incredible character I had to play.”
Before you feel a lump in your throat, I’ll add that she tossed in this aside:
“Of course, I love this part and I love Joe Locke madly, and we’ll see what the future holds.”
So, I suspect she’s just toying with fans Marvel-style, as some performers are known to do.
Speaking of which, rumors are heating up that the Scarlet Witch will return soon.
During Agatha All Along, the production team had a note from Marvel requesting that they refer to the character as “gone,” not “dead.”
That strikes me as VERY important, especially with two Avengers films lined up soon along with the news of Doctor Strange 3.
The MCU 2025 Concern
Just last week, I was mentioning Disney’s growing confidence in its 2025 release schedule.
Specifically, Disney CEO Bob Iger mentioned during the company’s quarterly earnings call that its 2025 films looked strong.
Iger referenced the three Marvel films debuting between now and the end of July.
Those titles include Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts*, and The Fantastic Four.
The first film in the queue is Captain America 4, which will follow Deadpool & Wolverine as the next MCU movie.
That sequel debuts on February 14th, 2025, which is just ten weeks from now. And that’s why this next story is so alarming.
Multiple sources have indicated that Brave New World didn’t test well. So, Marvel is performing reshoots.
Now, I’ll add that sometimes these stories prove wildly overblown, with influencers and reporters jumping the gun for clicks.
In other instances, the word is out that a production isn’t going well, and a kind of panic sets in.
Since Captain America 4 has already undergone multiple reshoots and suffered a year-long delay, I have some concerns here.
However, if Disney’s CEO lies on an earnings call, that’s a problem the SEC wouldn’t like.
So, I presume this situation isn’t as dramatic as it sounds, but it’s worth tracking.
Similarly, Thunderbolts* is reportedly undergoing some reshoots as well.
That story isn’t quite as big as deal since the film doesn’t debut until May, but the timing is interesting.
My current supposition is that the reshoots connect the stories a bit more rather than indicate something problematic.
We’ll know for sure in six months, though. That’s how long until both films are available in theaters. It won’t be long now.
Marvel Miscellany
When we discuss Agatha All Along, we contrast it to the MCU’s most successful TV series to date.
To me, that list is WandaVision, Loki, and Agatha All Along. Well, here’s a deleted scene from season two of Loki:
That’s the God of Mischief explaining in 50 seconds all the people who have crossed him over the years. And yes, there’s a Hercules mention!
In Kraven the Hunter news, there’s good news and very, VERY bad news.
The good news is that the film has secured a theatrical release in mainland China, which is a rarity for Hollywood titles right now.
The bad news is that the film is tracking to open in Madame Web territory, which would be…YIKES!
However, I’ll add that this debut wouldn’t be anywhere near as devastating.
As a December 11th release, Kraven the Hunter should enjoy inflated holiday box office in late September.
That should help to make the film’s domestic box office total more respectable, and the Chinese release should increase its overall global take.
Speaking of Sony, I mentioned last week that Spider-Man 4’s release date is up in the air due to a production delay.
Well, the word now is that the film will debut in December 2026.
That’s obviously not as soon as Sony wanted. But, as I just mentioned, that’s an ideal time for a theatrical release.
Marvel Miscellany Part II
Finally, Kevin Feige, the head of Marvel, has detailed Nova’s production a bit more.
Feige sounds excited about the long-gestating project. He has indicated that the Disney+ show provides a unique take on Nova Corps.
Some speculation had centered on the character of Nova as the final remaining member.
The most recent rumors suggest that Glenn Close and John C. Reilly will reprise their roles from Guardians of the Galaxy, though.
Take the conflicting rumors as you will. Either way, this project appears to be moving forward after years of stagnation.
