Krysten Ritter Is Ready to Return as Jennifer Jones
With Daredevil, Punisher, and Kingpin set to return in the upcoming Daredevil: Born Again series on Disney+, the door has seemingly been open for other Defenders to make a comeback.
One character who fans would surely love to see again is Krysten Ritter’s Jessica Jones.
As a quick recap, Jessica Jones was created by Melissa Rosenberg and ran for three seasons on Netflix. As with the rest of the Netflix Defenders shows (Daredevil, Luke Cake, Punisher, etc.), the series was initially stated to be a part of the broader Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Over time, however, the canonicity of the Netflix Marvel shows was called into question.
Marvel’s Original Plan
After the launch of Disney+ and Marvel Studios’s subsequent expansion into streaming, the Netflix Marvel Universe abruptly ended.
For years, the Defenders languished in limbo, not quite a part of the MCU, but too close for Marvel to let continue.
When Marvel announced that a Daredevil reboot was in the works, with Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio set to reprise their roles as Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk, respectively, the prevailing notion was that the series would distance itself from the original Daredevil show.
Instead, Marvel Studios seemed prime to introduce their own versions of the fan-favorite characters.
The ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ Overhaul Changed Everything
During the 2023 WGA Strike, however, the course of Marvel history was changed. With production on Dardevil: Born Again shut down, Kevin Feige and his team reviewed the completed episodes of the series and decided that something needed to change.
The solution, Marvel decided, was to make Born Again a continuation of the original Daredevil series. This change meant the version of Daredevil, Kingpin, and Punisher that fans had come to know and love would return. Additionally, it finally made Marvel announce that the entire Netflix Marvel Universe was canon.
Suddenly, there was a real opportunity for other Defenders to return.
Brad Winderbaum Wants More Jessica Jones
During a recent appearance at D23 Brazil, Marvel’s Head of Streaming, Brad Winderbaum, revealed that he would like to see Krysten Ritter’s Jessica Jones brought back into the MCU.
In a recent interview with ComicBook, the actress was asked about her thoughts on Winderbaum’s comments.
“Brad Winderbaum said that? That’s really exciting to hear. Isn’t that the guy who makes the call?” she told ComicBook during an interview for Sonic the Hedgehog 3. “Come on, Brad! Let’s get it going. Let’s do it. I’ll be ready.”
While it remains to be seen what, if any, plans Marvel has for Jessica Jones, Marvel has been adamant that it believes “street level” stories work best for television.
Perhaps then, we will see the story of Jones and the other Defenders continue after all.
