Charlie Cox Teases How Long He Will Continue to Play Daredevil
Once upon a time, it looked like Charlie Cox’s time in the Marvel multiverse had come to an end. After starring in Netflix’s Daredevil from 2015 through 2018, Cox and the rest of his Defenders co-stars were tossed aside when the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) expanded into streaming.
With the launch of Disney+, every Netflix series produced by Marvel Television was canceled, and for years, the characters lingered in limbo.
However, when Vincent D’Onofrio reprised his Daredevil role as Kingpin in 2021’s Hawkeye, the door seemed open for other Netflix Marvel characters to return.
Returning to Daredevil
Everything changed at San Diego Comic-Con 2022 when Kevin Feige announced that a new Daredevil series was in development. Subsequently, Cox would return as Matt Murdock for both Spider-Man: Now Way Home and She-Hulk: Attorney at Law.
After years in development and a creative overhaul that saw Marvel deem the entire Defenders Saga as canon, Daredevil’s story will continue when Born Again debuts on March 6.
During a recent appearance at FAN EXPO San Francisco, Charlie Cox was asked about portraying the character again.
“When you play a character — I’ve been playing him for 10 years — he gets older which is disconcerting,” Cox explained. “What’s weird about it is in 2018, when the show was cancelled I had like breaking up period, a mourning period because we thought we were gonna do a Season 4 then that didn’t happen and overnight we got a phone call and it was like, ‘We’re done, it’s finished’”.
How Long Will Cox Continue to Play Matt Murdoch?
According to Cox, he has no plans of hanging up his Daredevil suit anytime soon.
“But like all breakups, we got back together.” Adding, “But now I’m aware there will presumably come a time where it really does stop happening … and the longer it goes on the harder it will be to let go of … But when I was at Comic-Con I was chatting with a couple of the Daredevil writers, comic team, and they’re getting ready to release a Daredevil comic that takes place when Matt Murdock is in his 60s, so I was like, ‘Oh, okay, great, so we’ve got some time’.”
While Marvel’s plans for Daredevil beyond Born Again remain unclear, it sounds like fans can breathe a sigh of relief. Charlie Cox isn’t going anywhere.
