Chris Evans Says He Is NOT Returning to the MCU For ‘Avengers: Doomsday’

The Marvel world was set abuzz last month when it was reported that Chris Evans would return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) for a role in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday.

With Robert Downey Jr. already set to return as Doctor Doom, it looked like Kevin Feige and his team were getting the old gang back together.

While many fans were obviously thrilled with the news, others wondered what it meant for Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson. After all, Wilson assumed the mantle of Captain America in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and is set to finally get the spotlight in the upcoming Captain America: Brave New World.

Mackie’s Response When Hearing Evans Was Returning

In a new profile from Esquire, Mackie was asked about his feelings on Evans’s supposed return.

“I didn’t know!” Mackie explained. “I talked to Chris a few weeks ago and it wasn’t on the table then. At least, he didn’t tell me it was on the table, because I asked him. I was like, ‘You know, they said they’re bringing everyone back for the movie. Are you coming back?’ He goes, ‘Oh, you know, I’m happily retired.’”

Evans Says He Is Not Coming Back

When asked by the publication if the story was true, Evans confirmed that he was not coming back.

“That’s not true, though,” Evans said. “This always happens. I mean, it happens every couple years — ever since ‘Endgame.’ I’ve just stopped responding to it. Yeah, no — happily retired!”

Will Steve Rogers Return?

It remains to be seen whether Evans is telling the truth. After all, plenty of Marvel stars have lied about their future plans (I’m looking at you, Andrew Garfield).

Nevertheless, should Evans return, it is unlikely that he will portray the Captain America that fans have come to know and love. Instead, it is almost certain that he will play a variant of Steve Rogers or, like Downey, a new character altogether.

Avengers: Doomsday will hit theaters on May 1, 2026.
