MarvelBlog News for March 9th, 2025
We’ve got plenty of Avengers news and some Daredevil to discuss in this week’s MarvelBlog News.
Also, I hate to judge, but Sony sure appears to be flailing. Let’s get started.
The Russos Spill the Beans

Source: Deadline
I don’t claim to understand why, but the Russo Brothers have been on quite the media tour lately.
You’d think that Avengers: Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars were coming out in 2025, not 2026 and 2027.

I suspect the idea stems from a combination of three factors.
The first is that the brothers are genuinely excited to be back in the fold at Marvel after a frustrating tenure at Netflix.

And the second is that they’re promoting their new Netflix movie, which will probably be a combination of huge and awful.
Here’s the trailer for their film, The Electric State. Try not to laugh:
This fact has nothing to do with Marvel, but it’s important to me that you know that the robot is named Mr. Peanut.

Also, I’m pretty sure I speak for all of us when I say that I hope Chris Pratt’s mustache is fake.
Anyway, the third factor is something a bit more argumentative.

In some circles, the idea of Robert Downey Jr. (RDJ) returning to the MCU as Doctor Doom has drawn scorn.
Critics suggest that it’s proof that the MCU has run out of ideas and that Marvel has resorted to stunt casting.

I view this casting decision as a masterstroke, but that’s beside the point.
The Russo Brothers could feasibly be pulling some double duty by trying to use the Netflix media blitz to hype the Marvel projects.

Given how much Disney is paying them, that seems like the smart thing to do.
And the Russo Brothers sure have had a lot to say. Let’s quickly discuss some highlights.
About Avengers 5 and 6

The first thing you should know about a script is that the best directors can tell a lot from the basics.
Something as simple as the number of pages can indicate the screen time for the entire film.

Source: Variety
I know that sounds ridiculous, but Hollywood actors often joke about the Page 73 Rule.
That’s the one that says the film’s sex scene will be on page 73. It’s a real thing, I swear. Hollywood is ridiculous.
Anyway, even though filming hasn’t even begun for Avengers: Doomsday, the Russo Brothers know the film’s length.
You should expect Avengers 5 to run for two and a half hours, while Avengers: Secret Wars will be three hours long.

Coincidentally or not, that’s not much different from Avengers 3 and 4.
Avengers: Infinity War has a run time of 2 hours and 29 minutes, while Avengers: Endgame clocks in at 181 minutes.
I guess they figure that these lengths worked the first time, so why would they mess with success?
The Russos added that the upcoming scripts are “very radical” and promise to “challenge audiences.”

I’ll level with you that this announcement makes me nervous.
I vividly recall repeatedly having to explain the time travel elements of Endgame to loved ones.

In fact, I’d go so far as to argue that complexity is what has gotten the MCU in trouble recently.
Daring storylines such as the ones in Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Eternals, and Thor: Love & Thunder proved divisive.

I can say more about them, especially Eternals, but let’s keep it uncontroversial.
None of those three films is collectively perceived as the best of the MCU. And they were all daring.

Also, RDJ is apparently writing his own character backstory, which sounds, let’s say, artistic.
The Daredevil Update

I’ve got extremely positive news about Daredevil: Born Again. It’s stellar.
You can read my recap of episode one here, although I should warn you that spoilers abound.

Please don’t click that link until you’ve watched the first episode, as it spoils something huge.
But I’m not the only one gushing praise about this show. The series is currently 85 percent fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.

You’ll notice that the Popcornmeter is even higher at 86 percent, and that’s the stat that matters most to Disney.
Marvel fans have breathed a sigh of relief as they’ve realized that Disney has basically just made season four of Daredevil.

Not coincidentally, Nova and two other projects just experienced delays or cancellations, depending on your perspective.
Now, we’ve gotten word that the other Defenders like Jessica Jones and Luke Cage are under consideration for new series.

That fits Disney’s current business model of prioritizing established IPs and brands rather than new stories.
Frankly, that’s probably what ultimately undid Nova (this time).

Circling back to Born Again, IGN scored a coup in getting Charlie Cox to discuss the big surprise in Daredevil’s season premiere.
Obviously, you shouldn’t watch them until you’ve seen the show, either, but it’s an insightful interview.

For all the struggles in getting the Daredevil reboot off the ground, everything is coming up roses now.
Marvel Miscellany
This has been a light news week. So, I’ll only direct your attention to one other story.
In a fitting twist for a week with new Daredevil, Tatiana Maslany performed an interview with Collider.

Photo: Variety
She discusses She-Hulk, who sometimes smashes Matt Murdoch, and mentions that showrunner Jessica Gao anticipated everything.
Yes, I’m including the toxic masculinity backlash and the mixed reception in some circles.

This show was also daring, and it, too, proved divisive in some circles.
But I’m of the opinion that if you didn’t love She-Hulk, that’s on you. It’s hysterical.

Finally, there’s one rumor to mention, and that’s all I’m willing to call it at this point.
Apparently, Sony isn’t planning to release Spider-Man 4 on IMAX, at least according to some social media feed I’ve never heard of.

Source: Marvel Studios
The story could be accurate, but it’d be like Sony willingly lighting money on fire.
As a recent example of the importance of IMAX, Captain America: Brave New World was earning a significant chunk from it.

Image: Marvel
So, IMAX helps moderate performers, if anything, more than absolute blockbusters.
Sadly, that’s what Brave New World is: a moderate performer. I think we all knew and expected it, but it’s sad to see.
