The Russo Brothers Explain Why ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Was Filmed Without a Completed Script
One of the prevailing discussions surrounding Avengers: Doomsday has been the film’s lack of a completed script.
When Earth’s Mightiest Heroes joined the Russo Brothers in London last year, they were open about the fact that the script had not been finished.
On one hand, this was unsurprising. For years, Marvel has shot films and television shows without a completed script, often reworking and rewriting as filming progresses.

On the other hand, with Avengers: Doomsday expected to be one of the biggest films in box office history, shooting without a script seemed like an unnecessary risk.
The Russo Brothers Explain Their Process
In a recent interview with the Associated Press, the Russo brothers explained why filming without a script was always part of the plan.

“We’re improvisation-based, rehearsal-based directors,” Joe Russo said. “We like to see what the actors bring to the characters, and sometimes you don’t get the actors until a few days or few weeks before you shoot them. And a lot of the time, that’s when the magic happens.”
Telling Their Story
As stewards of the Avengers franchise, the Russo brothers have been tasked with sculpting the future of the MCU.

Nevertheless, the directors have remained focused on simply telling their story.
“It’s part of the unique challenge. The thing that Joe and I have always appreciated about our collaboration with Marvel is: Our job isn’t to answer for the entirety of the MCU,” Anthony says.

“We intersect it in a very specific way. It’s that intersection which is where we can make sense of things.”
Avengers: Doomsday will hit theaters on December 18.
