Robert Downey Jr. Is All in on Doctor Doom
Joe and Anthony Russo shocked the world last year when they announced that Robert Downey Jr. was returning to Marvel to portray Doctor Doom in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday.
The next Avengers film, set to hit theaters in May 2026, will see Downey once again bring one of Marvel’s iconic characters to the big screen. This time, however, he won’t be one of the good guys.

Robert Downey Jr. Is “So Dialed In”
As the Marvel Universe prepares to descend on London this summer, where they will film Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Infinity War back-to-back, the Russo Brothers have shared an interesting update on Downey’s involvement in the films.

“He is so immersed in it. He is so dialed in,” Joe Russo told Entertainment Tonight about Downey’s commitment to Doom. “He’s writing backstory, costume ideas… We were just on the phone with him this morning before we got here talking about it. He just loves really rich three-dimensional characters. He sees a real opportunity here with the character.”
The Marvel Break Recharged Downey
After portraying Tony Stark in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for more than 11 years, Downey sounded somewhat relieved to hang up his Iron Man suit following Avengers: Endgame.

Taking a break from the MCU seems to have reenergized Downey, who will now get the opportunity to tackle another one of Marvel’s most-iconic, and complicated, characters.
