MarvelBlog News for September 21st, 2025
That story we’ve tracked for a while has come to a conclusion. We’ll discuss the silliness in MarvelBlog News.
Season Three Is a Go!
Daredevil: Born Again will die another day. I say this because the governor just called.
As a refresher, Netflix signed on for a television – well, streaming – version of the MCU in 2015.
The company led with Daredevil, a street-level hero that Netflix hoped could build a franchise.
Executives with Netflix and Marvel alike believed that Daredevil could be the start of something big.
Netflix envisioned a build toward an Avengers: Endgame type of superhero team-up.
So, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and my beloved Jessica Jones all got Netflix series as well.
The Punisher wasn’t part of the original plan, but he became one of the standalone series characters, too.
Ultimately, the various Netflix shows achieved every goal imaginable, but they collectively fell short in the end.
The Defenders, the presumed Avengers: Endgame series, debuted to thoroughly mediocre reviews.
Around this time, Disney, Marvel’s corporate overlord, decided to start its own streaming service.
At that point, Marvel and Netflix were headed for a divorce due to no fault of either party.
In simplest terms, it was like Marvel’s parents hated Netflix so much it poisoned the relationship.
In reality, Disney and Netflix get along swimmingly, but that’s the best analogy I can give here.
With Disney doing something different, Netflix agreed to see other superheroes.
Meanwhile, Daredevil and the other Defenders were trapped in the nether region of awkward IP.
Disney wanted these characters for itself. So, Netflix willingly, albeit grudgingly, canceled each series.
Importantly, few Netflix series last beyond two or three seasons anyway. Ergo, it probably would have happened anyway.
In the interim, Daredevil and the other characters from these series lost their luster.
Daredevil Redux
Everyone who watched Daredevil will agree that one thing is true. The series was exemplary.
So, there’s a love for this character and these performers, and a bond shared by the cast.
Stars Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio often spoke of their pride in the project and a willingness to return to their roles.
That opportunity presented itself in the form of a new Daredevil series on Disney+.
As is so often the case with dream projects, the story quickly took a turn from joyous to frustrating.
The original plots and scripts for Daredevil Redux weren’t up to snuff, as it was to be a legal procedural.
Do you know what Marvel fans love? Courtroom dramas. Okay, you may, but it’s not why you watch Marvel.
In fact, Disney recently tried this with She-Hulk, and it morphed into an office comedy.

The studio already had a precedent that the idea wasn’t sound, and somebody eventually blinked.
Disney chased off the original creative team and started from scratch. In the process, the show changed course.

Marvel took the new Daredevil in a different and what must have been a better direction.
I say this because Daredevil: Born Again season one featured masterful storytelling.

Image: Marvel
You don’t want to know how many times I’ve watched the bank heist episode.
There’s just one problem: Nobody watched.
Whither Daredevil?

Image: Marvel
Okay, that’s a slight exaggeration, as I just acknowledged that I watched, but it’s close enough to be true.
The new Daredevil series never charted on the Nielsen charts, a rarity for Marvel shows on Disney+.

Image: Marvel
Agatha All Along, its predecessor, had charted, as had the final season of Marvel’s What If…? and X-Men ’97.
Ironheart, which debuted after Daredevil: Born Again, also charted one week.

Image: Marvel
Only Daredevil fell to hit its mark with regards to ratings, which raised a natural question.
Would Daredevil: Born Again be done after just two seasons? I’m not saying one season for a reason.

Image: Marvel
In the wake of the show’s reboot, Disney split the long episode order into a pair of seasons.
That wasn’t the original plan, but plans change when projects aren’t going well.

Image: Marvel
So, we were getting two seasons no matter what. The debate centered on the third one.
MarvelBlog has covered it a lot recently, as Charlie Cox spoke off the cuff during an interview.

Image: Marvel
His comments suggested that Daredevil: Born Again was about to get canceled.
D’Onofrio quickly countered, suggesting that Cox’s comments were being misinterpreted.

Image: Marvel
Soon afterward, Cox himself acknowledged as much, indicating he thought the show had a good chance at a third season.
And both of them were right! Disney has renewed Daredevil: Born Again for season three.

From a ratings perspective, this move doesn’t make much sense, but from a creativity perspective, it’s genius.
The plot of season one involved Wilson Fisk becoming more powerful as he committed crimes.
Now, the Defenders must reunite to stop him, which feels topical and could resonate more with fans.
Even if it doesn’t, Daredevil: Born Again isn’t an expensive show to make. So, it’s no harm, no foul.

Due to a Disney expo taking place in China, we finally have a synopsis for Avengers: Doomsday.
“Doctor Doom has officially arrived in the MCU. This villain, a master of cutting-edge science and powerful magic, will unleash a cascading crisis across the entire multiverse.”

Finally, in sad news for the entirety of the film industry, Robert Redford has died at the age of 89.
After a storied film career and an unprecedented industry-wide impact from the Sundance Film Festival, Redford pulled a shocker.

The actor joined the MCU as the villain in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
And the best part was that nobody knew he was the villain until they watched the movie.

I’m on record as stating this is Marvel’s best standalone movie, and Redford made the whole movie.
By playing against type as someone who had sold out his values, Redford elevated The Winter Soldier.

Also, those of you who have never seen Sneakers should check it out! I’ll add some movie trivia, too.
Watch The Sting while you’re at it. Then, figure out the connection between Luther in that film and the NSA Director in Sneakers.

Redford made one of the best films of the 1970s and 1990s with a father and son.
