Jon Bernthal Says ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Will Feature the Same Punisher That Fans Have Come to Know and Love

Not too long ago, it seemed as though Jon Bernthal’s run as the Punisher had wrapped up for good.

When Marvel Studios first revealed their plans to revive the Daredevil franchise with Daredevil: Born Again, Kevin Feige and his team were clear that they wanted to distinguish the MCU’s take on The Man Without Fear from the version seen on Netflix.

As part of that approach, the new series was expected to adopt a lighter tone with less violence.

The Moment Everything Changed

Fortunately for fans, the 2023 Hollywood strikes gave Marvel an unexpected opportunity to pivot. After reviewing the finished episodes of Daredevil: Born Again, Feige concluded that the show wasn’t coming together as hoped.

Marvel ultimately chose to rework the series, reconnect it to the original Netflix Daredevil, and embrace a TV-MA rating. And just like that, the door reopened for Bernthal’s return.

Eventually, Bernthal would not only reprise his role as Frank Castle in Daredevil: Born Again, but Marvel would also announce that a Punisher special was in development.

‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’

Then came the news that Bernthal would suit up again in Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

While many fans were thrilled to hear that Punisher and Spidey were set to team up on the big screen, others have worried about how the R-rated Frank Castle will fit in the PG-13 world of Spider-Man.

In a recent interview with ScreenRant, Bernthal was asked about the tonal differences between his previous performances as Punisher and Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

According to the actor, fans have nothing to worry about.

“I think what was really important to me and to Destin and to Tom is that we believed that The Punisher could walk off of the Spider-Man set and could walk onto the special set, and I do believe that we achieved that.”

While it remains to be seen how Marvel manages to deliver a PG-13 Punisher, it is good to hear that the Brand New Day team does not want to water down the character.

By the sound of things, Frank Castle fans have every reason to be excited.
