Another Potential T’Challa Replacement Has Spoken Out
by Justin Hermes ·
One of the biggest questions surrounding the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is what lies ahead for Black Panther.
When the first Black Panther film debuted in 2018, it appeared that Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa was poised to become the new face of the MCU, particularly as the original Avengers began stepping away from the spotlight.

By the time Avengers: Endgame arrived, Black Panther stood alongside Captain America and Iron Man as one of the franchise’s central heroes, and the future seemed incredibly promising.

Then, the unthinkable happened.
Chadwick Boseman’s Tragic Death
On August 28, 2020, Chadwick Boseman passed away from colon cancer at the age of 43, leaving Marvel Studios facing an unprecedented situation.
Ultimately, Ryan Coogler and the rest of the Black Panther creative team decided to move forward with a sequel. When it came to T’Challa, however, Marvel faced a difficult choice — recast the character or retire him from the story.

That question was answered in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which opened with T’Challa’s death and saw Shuri (Letitia Wright) step into the role of Black Panther.
Will Marvel Recast the Role?
While many fans applauded the decision to shift the franchise’s focus to Shuri, others continued to mourn the loss of one of Marvel’s most iconic heroes. In the years since, speculation has persisted that Marvel could eventually recast T’Challa, potentially using the multiversal events of Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars as a narrative bridge.

One of the names that has been frequently mentioned as a possible new Black Panther is Aldis Hodge.
Hodge Weighs In
During a recent interview with Who Let Us Out, Hodge noted that he was “complimented” to even be considered for the role.
Nevertheless, he was clear that Marvel had not reached out.

“Look, Marvel ain’t called me. Okay, I’m gonna tell you. Ain’t nobody called me, but if I was to ever get that call, and it was something that I felt, or it was a storyline that I felt complemented, and added to the legacy they already initiated, then I would love to be a part of carrying or be just a small part of being an asset to carry that on.”
Whether he assumes the role of Black Panther or another actor takes the mantle, Hodge believes they will have their work cut out for them.

“I’m a fan… obviously, of the work. But when I think about Black Panther and anybody who kind of steps into that space, if they are to recast it, I believe what was so impactful about the film generally is a cultural impact. What Chadwick [Boseman] and [Ryan] Coogler laid down was foundation that was relevant and to a degree legacied, because there are a host of black kids, brown kids, that could look up to something and see themselves in something bigger in value.,” he continued.

“That, to me, whoever steps into that space, they would have to complement and continue that legacy. So, it’s not necessarily, to me, stepping into a role, it’s stepping into service, because that’s what that movie means to people.”
