It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s…HENRY CAVILL in the MCU?
A new rumor suggests that Henry Cavill, who currently portrays Kal-El (A.K.A. Superman) in the Warner Bros. DC Comics adaptations, could be heading to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Um, say what? The rumor emerges after the announcement last week that producer J.J. Abrams (Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker) and writer Ta-Nehisi Coates (Black Panther) will be rebooting Superman for the big screen, spurring speculation of a switch in the super’s starring role.
Is Martha’s son joining the MCU?
Who Could He Be?
There are swirling rumors about the possibility that Cavill could join the MCU, with one theory positing that the actor could be appearing as Captain Britain (with the article noting that an Easter Egg in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame suggests that the character may already be active in the MCU).
While this is definitely a possibility, here at Marvel Blog, we have another contender we’re rooting for: Hyperion, the frontman of the Squadron Supreme!
Who Is Hyperion?
In the Marvel Comics, the main setting is designated “Earth-616.” By contrast, Mark Milton (A.K.A. Hyperion) is from Earth-712. Abandoned as a child, Milton, the last member of an extinct race, was raised by his adopted parents before moving the city of Cosmopolis, where he becomes a cartoonist for a newspaper, eventually entering into a relationship with star reporter Lonni Lattimer.
Meanwhile, Hyperion joins forces with other superheroes on his planet – like Nighthawk, a rich businessman turned costumed vigilante – to create the Squadron Supreme.
Does all this sound a little bit like Superman and the Justice League? That’s why Cavill would be perfect for the role of Hyperion!
With the MCU leaning into meta fictional casting – like the kind that appears in basically every episode of WandaVision – perhaps placing an actor with Superman on his resume into a role that bears a striking resemblance to the Son of Krypton is something to which we can look forward!
To be continued…
But before we learn what role Cavill may play in the MCU, we still have to wait and see whether or not Cavill will be recast as Superman. And in the meantime, Cavill’s performance as the Man of Steel can be seen on March 18th, 2021, when Zack Snyder’s Justice League will be available for streaming on HBO Max.
