Review: Demon Days: X-Men #1 is an interesting entry
Are you looking for a comic that you can pick up off the shelf of your local comic shop and immediately dive into without any additional assigned reading? Then you may want to consider Demon Days: X-Men #1 by Peach Momoko, translated by Zack Davisson, and lettered by Ariana Maher.
Demon Days: X-Men #1
Demon Days is a reimagining of the Marvel Comics universe, but with the setting and character archetypes transposed to an ancient, mythical Japanese setting. Instead of superheroes, average humans live side-by-side with Yokai, elemental spirits who sometimes take the form of creatures such as ogres.
In addition to a world with echoes of the comic stories, many of the individual characters are based on familiar Marvel superheroes, as well. It’s fun to pick out the redesigned characters and match them with their more familiar mutant counterparts in the 616, with Logan being an especially cute adaptation.
Plus, it isn’t just the mutant members of the X-Men who appear in these pages, although I will not name names so as to leave some surprises for the reader!
The Art of Peach Momoko
This comic is notable for its outstanding art by ex-tattoo artist Momoko, who has a history of doing Marvel Comics variant covers, and it feels fresh while still evoking the familiar Marvel characters. Plus, the story’s pacing is brisk and enjoyable, which makes the fact that this issue is Momoko’s writing and interior art debut for Marvel Comics all the more impressive.
Plus, you’ll want to read every single page of the pamphlet, as the back matter includes some very insightful information on the mythology referenced by the story (as well as more of Momoko’s irresistible art).
At the conclusion of the story, the reader will be left breathlessly awaiting the next entry. Sadly, we won’t get to return to this exciting new realm until June 2021, when Demon Days: Mariko #1 will be released. One thing we can tell you right now, though: here at Marvel Blog, we’ll definitely be visiting our local comic shop to pick up the next issue come summer!
