The Avengers Boosted SHAWARMA’s Popularity
“And then shawarma after?” With these words, uttered by Robert Downey, Jr.’s Tony Stark at the Battle of New York during the climax of 2012’s The Avengers, the world changed. Do you think we’re being hyperbolic? Think again, Marvel Blog True Believers!
In an article on mashed, several different restaurants were quoted as saying that they saw shawarma sales soar after the movie was released, which features a mid-credits in which the members of the Avengers team satisfy their craving for delicious pita-wrapped spiced meat! The article states that the reports came in from across the United States – including a popular falafel cart in Queens, New York (hey, maybe Peter Parker contributed to the rising sales).
If you’d like to visit the restaurant where the aforementioned mid-credits shawarma-eating scene was actually shot, you’ll want to head to Shalom Grill in Los Angeles, California. The restaurant was called Elat Burger when the scene was filmed, but it’s still open for business under the new name, so you can swing by for a tasty meal and take a picture at the same place where Earth’s mightiest heroes got their world-saving grub on!
And soon, you’ll be able to get a taste of shawarma inside the Marvel Universe yourself, thanks to a new eating opportunity at Avengers Campus: one of the restaurants will naturally be a shawarma cart when the brand-new land opens on June 4th, 2021.
It’s true what they say: one person really can change the world! Or in this case: one person’s craving for shawarma! Thanks for making this delicious treat more widely available, Tony!
