LOKI 007: AGENT OF ASGARD Loki Variant Primer
In the 2014 series Loki: Agent of Asgard by Al Ewing, Lee Garbett, Nolan Woodard, Jorge Coelho, Lee Loughridge, and Clayton Cowles, readers were introduced to a version of the God of Mischief who may actually look pretty familiar to him!
But that wasn’t the only important element that was included in Agent of Asgard, and we think that Marvel Studios’ Loki on Disney+ is taking more than a little inspiration from the panels of this Marvel Comic.
Loki Academy is back in session, Marvel Blog True Believers!
Agent of Asgard: Key Takeaways
One of the most important takeaways for our primer on Agent of Asgard is that Loki is a morally complicated protagonist. Is he evil, pretending to be good? Or is he good, but prone to evil? This moral complexity is at the heart of some of the best incarnations of Loki, and it looks like we’ll be getting more of it on Disney+.
The next key takeaway from this Marvel comic arc about the infamous trickster: this story includes multiple Lokis!
1. King Loki (Old Variant)
There’s an old version of Loki (who looks an awful lot like Richard E. Grant on this cover).
King Loki is the version of of the trickster whose evil plans all seem to work out – like he even manages to annihilate humankind in his own timeline. He’s also a ruthless ruler that travels back in time to kill Odin, defeat Thor, and stir-up trouble with his younger self and Asgard’s knights.
2. Loki (Kid Variant)
There’s a child version of Loki (who may look familiar to you from certain recently released toys). Following Loki’s apparent death in a previous Marvel Comics run, he’s reborn as Kid Loki, a different variant of themselves.
3. Loki (Woman Variant)
Agent of Asgard also includes a female version of Loki, the Goddess of Stories, but before you go calling her Lady Loki, don’t… she can use your support right now (if you want to learn more about this history check out Rosie Knight‘s article at Nerdist).
4. Loki (Other Variants)
And… there are still other versions of Loki at play in these panels, as well, like Animal Loki.
Too many Lokis? We would never say such a thing!
Loki Variants Incoming!
Do you think that several Lokis would (or even could) get along? Maybe not so much! In fact, these multiple Lokis end up being antagonists for one another. Loki versus Loki!
And finally, it’s important to note that in Agent of Asgard, Loki is hard at work trying to earn his redemption for his past misdeeds. But, does he have additional machinations at work? Well, this is Loki we’re talking about, Marvel Blog True Believers!
